The Caruggio or Carruggio is a street, alley or even portico typical of the historic centers of Liguria. The term derives from the Latin quadrivium, or from the more popular quadruvium. In the Middle Ages, the Genoese street network was based on the carruggi, controlled by the city's powerful merchant families. Often the buildings on the sides of the carruggio overlooked it with a portico, which although it was for public use was built independently by the owner of each building, as can be seen from the fact that the style of each piece of portico changes when moving from one building to another, as can be seen very well for example in the historic center of Chiavari.
