Despite its size and importance, it is not the capital of the state of Florida, which is Tallahassee. Miami’s population explosion in recent years has been driven both by foreigners and other cities in the United States. The origin of the word Miami is uncertain. One possible root could be a Native American expression for fresh water. The area is, in fact, rich in water.
