L’11 novembre 1493, Cristoforo Colombo, durante il suo secondo viaggio nelle Americhe, avvistata l’isola, la battezzò Isla de San Martín per onorare la ricorrenza di San Martino di Tours. Tuttavia, anche se rivendicata immediatamente come territorio spagnolo, Colombo non vi sbarcò, e per la Spagna la colonizzazione dell’isola rimase una bassa priorità.
