Àgave L. is a genus of monocotyledonous succulent plants. Due to its shape and the variety of species it is a very popular plant in public and private gardens throughout the world; in its places of origin (Central America) it has played a profound role in the life of local populations. The name was given to it in 1753 by Linnaeus (from the Greek ἀγαυός, “illustrious”, “noble”). Before Linnaeus's naming there were already original names for the species: mezcal, of Indo-American origin, and still in use in north-western Mexico; maguey, used in central Mexico, a name that supposedly had origins in the Antilles and was subsequently imported to the continent by the Spanish conquerors[2]; metl, of Nahuatl origin, still used in central Mexico.
