The city, one of the main ones in Sardinia and the fifth in the region in terms of population, is one of the gateways to the island, thanks to the airport located near Fertilia. Already the provincial capital during the 19th century and the surrounding area until the abolition of these entities, today it is considered the capital of the Riviera del Corallo, a name that derives from the fact that in the waters of its harbor there is a large quantity of red coral, fished by coral divers, an activity that with the processing and sale, has had great economic and cultural importance for centuries, so much so that a branch of coral is included in the city's coat of arms.
