Fresco from the Lupanar of Pompeii
One of the attractions of the ancient city of Pompeii is its lupanare (for those who don't know, it's a brothel).
What purpose did these frescoes serve? In addition to creating “atmosphere” they had a practical function: they were like menus with which the customers, who very often spoke different languages than the prostitutes, could clearly indicate their preferred service.
