A legend from Lucca tells that in particular light conditions it is possible to see a green sparkle coming from the statue; it would be, according to the legend, an emerald, set in ancient times and never found. Some sources, mostly from elderly inhabitants of the city, confirm having seen the phantom sparkle, but it has never been proven that an emerald is set in the work, which is also highly unlikely.
