Star anise in Guadeloupe

Anice stellato a Guadeloupe

Anice stellato a Guadeloupe.

The spice is very widespread and the recipes that include it are virtually infinite. However, we can say in broad terms that anise is used to flavor chicken, pork and rabbit, just as the Greeks and Romans used it. It is also used to accompany vegetables and cheeses, especially in Northern European countries.

Dream Beaches: Brownie Beach in Barbados

Brownie beach a Barbados

Dream beaches: Brownie beach in Barbados.
Absolutely the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean I have ever been to. Fine white sand and transparent turquoise water.
A couple of kilometers from the port (I walked there in 20 minutes but returned by taxi) this beach offers everything: bars, restaurants, resorts, sports activities, boat trips... but you can simply lay your towel on the sand and dive into the sea.

Here's where the bay is located:

Barbados is composed mainly of limestone. It is a tropical island, constantly beaten by equatorial winds. Parts of the interior of the island are covered with large sugar cane plantations. Barbados is one of the Lesser Antilles, located east of the main chain of islands, and the closest nations are Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Piccoli calamari fritti in Vietnam

Piccoli calamari fritti in Vietnam

Piccoli calamari fritti in Vietnam.

A plate of pansoti with meat sauce

Pansoti o pansotti al ragù

A plate of pansoti with meat sauce.
A delight of Ligurian cuisine is this type of pasta seasoned with meat sauce (the tocco).
These are in fact bought from a pasta factory in Sestri Levante, the Pastifico Moderno right in the middle of the Sestrese alley (it doesn't have its own website, here's the review on tripadvisor.it).
The meat sauce, yes, is homemade. It's not the famous tocco described by Loris but it's still what my mother makes (from her mother-in-law's recipe) and it's delicious.

This pasta, pansoti, pansòti in Ligurian, (from the Ligurian pansa, in Italian “belly”), is a stuffed pasta typical of Ligurian cuisine, similar to ravioli, from which they differ essentially in size and the absence of meat in the filling. Pansoti with walnut sauce (pansöti co-a sarsa de noxe) is one of the cheapest and most characteristic dishes of the Genoese tradition. Since pansoti do not contain meat, they are a lean dish, once considered suitable for the penitential period of Lent. They are often mistakenly also called “pansòtti”, as in some Ligurian provinces there is verbal emphasis on the last syllables; the double letter is therefore to be attributed to an exclusively vocal language.

A wooden jetty at Brownie Beach in Barbados

Pontile a Barbados

A wooden pier at Brownie Beach in Barbados.
One of the iconic photos of this Caribbean island and the splendid Brownes Beach in Carlisle Bay.
The water and sand on this beach, as I told you in another post, are truly incredible.
Right in the center of the bay there is this wooden pier, used to let tourists get on one of the many boats that take them to see the turtles.
The ritual photos are a must!

The name of this Antillean state was coined in 1536 by the Portuguese explorer Pedro A. Campos who called the island Os Barbados (the bearded ones) inspired by the ficus trees that grew there and whose long aerial roots looked like “beards”. The name that the Arawak natives attributed to the island was Ichirouganaim.

Grilled Uruguayan Filet in Montevideo

Filetto uruguaiano

Grilled Uruguayan fillet steak in Montevideo.
A few weeks ago, I was on the Costa Fascinosa with cruises that left from Brazil and, every now and then, arrived in Montevideo, Uruguay.
In the capital, really close to the port, there is the Mercado: a former covered market that today hosts about ten grilled meat restaurants.
This is very close to what I consider paradise!
I had already been there a few years ago and I couldn't miss it.
As you can see from the photo, this was my lunch: a nice grilled fillet steak with chips.
In the next few days, and months, I will post more photos of other dishes ordered by my colleagues; all absolutely delicious and reasonably priced!
