One of the symbols of Rapallo is its splendid Civic Tower, the tallest building in the coastal town, built next to the church (pieve) of Santo Stefano, of which it mistakenly appears to be the bell tower.

The largest and most important of the ancient towers of the city, the Civic Tower is a structural work from 1473. According to historical sources, its construction was commissioned by the noble citizens to symbolize peace among the inhabitants of the village after a century shaken by internal and power struggles between the major city factions of the medieval era.
