A shrine dedicated to Mary above an ancient door in Portovenere.
Walking through the alleys of the seaside village of Portovenere I found, and photographed, this old door which bears a small shrine dedicated to Maria Mater Boni Consilii.

The aedicule is a relatively small architectural structure, with the practical function of housing and protecting the element placed therein. The term derives from the Latin aedicula, diminutive of aedes (“temple”) and therefore with the original meaning of “small temple”. Originally it was a miniature temple, which housed the statue or the representation of a deity, and a typical example could be the domestic lararium.
