Aragosta colorata

Aragosta colorata

It is medium-large in size with an average length of 20–40 cm and a maximum of 50 cm and a weight of up to 8 kg. The body is sub-cylindrical in shape, covered by an armor that changes several times during growth to recreate a new one. The carapace is divided into two parts - the cephalothorax (anterior part) and the abdomen (posterior part) - with a reddish-brown to purple-brown color and is covered with conical spines. The abdomen is made up of 6 mobile segments, and is equipped with a tiny stinger.

Farfalla in Baia

A beautiful butterfly with the Bay of Silence in the background.
This morning, today is May 26, 2018, as usual I popped into the Bay of Silence (Portobello) to enjoy a few minutes of sun.
While I was on the Cappuccini climb, looking for the best spot to immortalize the beach, today really full of bathers (it seems the summer heat has finally arrived), I happened to see a beautiful butterfly land on these flowers.
And it even stayed still for several seconds!

Velelle

Velelle in Baia del Silenzio on May 16, 2018.
The velelle (or velette or barchette di San Pietro) are dissolving along the beach of Baia del Silenzio and, as anyone who has seen them knows, they are not doing so by leaving a nice smell.
Thanks to the small storm that is lashing the Riviera these days, they are there beached on the shoreline… Luckily when the sun returns they will already be gone.
For now, the photo.

Have you ever seen these beached animals?

Here's where the bay is located:

Velella velella, also known as St. Peter's or St. John's boat, is a colony of hydrozoans of the Porpitidae family. It is often found in all oceans, on the shores or at most 1-2 cm deep in the water, with a preference for warm or temperate waters. Like other cnidarians (coelenterates), Velella velella is a carnivorous animal. It captures its prey, usually plankton, using its tentacles that contain toxins. These toxins, while effective against the prey, are harmless to humans, as they cannot penetrate the skin and do not cause any reaction to human skin. However, it is preferable to avoid touching your eyes after picking up a Velella velella.

The lizard, a common lizard in Italy

The lizard, a common lizard in Italy.
The lizard is certainly one of the most common reptiles (or lizards) in Italy together with the gecko and the, more difficult to encounter, green lizard.
In my garden, before the arrival of Nicco (my dog) and especially the neighbors' cat, there were many; now unfortunately there are only a few left.
Here is one anyway with a nice macro.

They have a flat, triangular head, a flat trunk and a long tail; they are quadrupeds, even with non-visible legs (in Anguidae such as the slow worm), tiny ones (in Skinks such as the Long-nosed Skink) and external ears without an auricle (for the individual species see the Sauria Category).

Formiche operose

Formiche operose

Formiche operose.

A swallows nest in Sestri Levante

Nido di rondini

A swallows' nest in Sestri Levante.
Every year in Sestri Levante, and always in the same places, you can see some swallows' nests.
This one, at the end of the alley, is under a terrace.
At this moment the nestling is anxiously waiting for some food. In the second photo the mother (or father) is bringing something to put under their beak.

And have you ever seen them?

Most swallows are insectivorous and catch insects in flight. The composition of their insect diet varies depending on the species and the time of year. Some species may be selective and not catch every insect they encounter in flight, preferring larger prey. They also avoid certain types of prey, especially stinging insects such as bees and wasps.
