It is the first municipality you come across when travelling from Genoa towards the Riviera di Levante, in a small inlet at the mouth of the river of the same name. Among the reliefs of the territory there is Mount Cordona (803 m) along the ancient path to the hamlet of Sessarego and Mount Rotondo (789 m). The beaches alternate with deep and characteristic cliffs. It is possible to practice surfing there. The hinterland is typical of eastern Liguria, partly with strips of olive groves, with the possibility of excursions.

The view of the Grecino Bridge in Varese Ligure

The view of the Grecino Bridge in Varese Ligure.
One of the symbols of the Borgo Rotondo (this is the name given to the beautiful Varese Ligure, famous for its circular-shaped historic center) is certainly the old bridge that connects the actual village to the Grecino neighborhood, separated by the Crovana stream that shortly after flows into the Vara.

Commissioned by the Fieschi family for the control and defense of the Varese territory, it is made up of identical stone houses arranged along the perimeter which, with an elliptical shape, enclose the two main squares (Piazza Fieschi and Piazza Castello), where the commercial activities, warehouses and laboratories were located in the underlying porticoes.

The snow-capped Maritime Alps seen from Mount Zatta

Le Alpi Marittime innevate viste dal Monte Zatta

The snow-capped Maritime Alps seen from Monte Zatta.
One of the most beautiful paths I remember walking is definitely the Zatta ring.
Coming down from the ridge, along the way back, you look towards the West and, on a day like the one I had been on, you could see the snow-capped peaks of the Alps very well (here in the photo I think they are the Maritime ones).

Have you ever been on this trail?

I took several photos along the Monte Zatta path and if you want to see them go to this page:

To see in detail the path I took I invite you to go to wikiloc.com.

The summit of the Zatta mountain massif consists of a long wavy ridge, crossed by an easy ridge path. On the outer edges of this ridge are the Zatta di Ponente mountain (1355 m) and the Prato Pinello mountain (1390 m). Between the two ends rises the main peak, the Zatta di Levante mountain (1404 m). The southern slope is steep and stony, while the northern slope, towards the Bocco pass, has a gentler slope and is covered by a large beech forest.

Since the great influx of foreign guests – first British and then German – in the early twentieth century, Portofino’s economy has been closely linked to tourism. The local “Piazzetta” overlooked by public refreshment areas, shops, boutiques and other commercial activities was recognized in July 2012 as a Historic Place of Italy, the first and only certificate issued by the association of the same name, for its historical and cultural value.

The most significant architectural aspect of the town is the presence of colored buildings overlooking the beach. The colors and the lighter horizontal lines (called string courses) served the sailors of Camogli to more easily recognize their home among the various floors of the buildings in the village and return there after fishing.

Between the 7th and 8th centuries, following the conquest of Liguria by the Lombards, the Columban monks of Bobbio, who followed the rule of Saint Columbanus and continued their work of evangelization, built a monastery that over time grew to become a religious and economic nerve center. The birth of Brugnato is therefore linked to the foundation of the abbey which, like other monastic sites in Liguria and northern Italy, depended on the abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio.
