The alley of Mattarana a small village in Liguria

The caruggio of Mattarana a small village in Liguria.
Some time ago I went to eat ravioli in a famous trattoria in Mattarana, a small Ligurian village in the province of La Spezia.
After lunch I took a stroll around the village to take some photos and this is the main caruggio, with the church at the end, around which the few houses were built.

A characteristic alley of Portovenere

Un vicolo caratteristico di Portovenere

A characteristic alley in Portovenere.
Portovenere, a jewel of the Ligurian Riviera, is famous for its picturesque alleys that tell stories of times gone by. One of these alleys, hidden among the colorful houses and ancient walls, offers a unique and fascinating experience.
Walking through this narrow and winding alley, you have the impression of taking a dip in the past. The stones worn by time and the facades of the houses, with their bright colors and wooden shutters, create a magical atmosphere. Every corner seems to keep a secret, every door tells a story.
The architectural details are what makes this alley so special. The stone arches, the small niches with statues of saints, and the flower-filled balconies add a touch of beauty and authenticity.
Walking through this alley is a sensory experience. The scent of the sea mixes with that of the flowers and aromatic herbs that grow spontaneously. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks and the birds singing complete this idyllic picture.
This characteristic alley of Portovenere is a place to discover slowly, without haste. Each visit reveals new details, new stories. It is a corner of peace and beauty that invites you to stop and enjoy the moment.

Where is Portovenere:

In 1997, Porto Venere, together with the islands of Palmaria, Tino, Tinetto and the Cinque Terre, was included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The municipality of Porto Venere is located at the southern end of a peninsula, which, detaching itself from the jagged coastline of the eastern Ligurian Riviera, forms the western shore of the Gulf of La Spezia, also known as the “Gulf of Poets”.

Walking through the city center I came across the window of the Caracciolo goldsmith's shop which has been present since 1880.
The wooden windows are beautiful and have been kept as they were when they were born.

To tell the truth I was there to taste the ravioli at the famous trattoria La Tagliola.

From inside the beech forest of Monte Zatta.
Some time ago I walked the beautiful path that leads from Passo del Bocco to the top of Monte Zatta. Well before reaching the top you cross the splendid beech forest (one of the largest in Liguria) inside which I took this beautiful wide-angle photo.

The summit of the Zatta mountain massif consists of a long wavy ridge, crossed by an easy ridge path. On the outer edges of this ridge are the Zatta di Ponente mountain (1355 m) and the Prato Pinello mountain (1390 m). Between the two ends rises the main peak, the Zatta di Levante mountain (1404 m). The southern slope is steep and stony, while the northern slope, towards the Bocco pass, has a gentler slope and is covered by a large beech forest.

The esplanade of the church of San Pietro in Portovenere

La spianata della chiesa di San Pietro a Portovenere

The esplanade of the church of San Pietro in Portovenere.
The church of San Pietro in Portovenere is one of the most evocative and fascinating places in Liguria. Situated at the end of the promontory that juts out into the sea, this Gothic church, with its characteristic black and white bands, dominates the surrounding landscape and offers a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Poets and the island of Palmaria¹².
The church of San Pietro has an ancient and complex history. Its origins date back to the 5th century, when a small early Christian church was built on the remains of a pagan temple dedicated to Venus¹. In the 13th century, the Genoese built a new Gothic church, connected to the pre-existing structure, creating a single larger building².
The architecture of the church is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The oldest part, in dark stone, is characterised by a rectangular plan with a semicircular apse, while the Gothic part, built by the Genoese, features the typical black and white bands¹². Inside, the church is divided into three naves separated by pillars, with a white marble altar².
The esplanade of the church of San Pietro is a large stone-paved area, surrounded by ancient walls. This open space offers a panoramic view of the sea and the surrounding cliffs, making it an ideal place for walks and moments of contemplation³. The esplanade is also a starting point for exploring the natural and historical beauties of Portovenere, such as Byron's Cave and the Doria Castle⁴.
The church of San Pietro and its esplanade have been a source of inspiration for many poets and artists. Eugenio Montale, Nobel Prize winner for literature, described this place as a “Christian temple” where “every near hour is ancient”¹. The beauty and serenity of this place continue to enchant visitors from all over the world.
Portovenere is easily reached by car, bus or ferry from La Spezia. Once you arrive, a picturesque street full of little shops leads to the church of San Pietro and its esplanade².
The esplanade of the church of San Pietro in Portovenere is a place of extraordinary beauty and historical importance. With its unique architecture, spectacular views and poetic atmosphere, it represents an unmissable stop for those visiting Liguria.

Here is the spot where I took this photo:

The church of San Pietro in the capital. Built between the 5th and 13th centuries in Genoese Gothic style, it is perched on the rock of the promontory of the Bocche di Porto Venere. The church of San Pietro is the “Christian temple” cited by Eugenio Montale in a suggestive poem, dedicated to Portovenere.

One of the symbols of the beautiful village of Bogliasco, pearl of the Golfo Paradiso in Liguria, is certainly this medieval bridge that allows you to cross the Bogliasco stream and which is generally called "the Roman bridge".

On the official website of Cultural Heritage I then found other interesting information: here.

It is the first municipality you come across when travelling from Genoa towards the Riviera di Levante, in a small inlet at the mouth of the river of the same name. Among the reliefs of the territory there is Mount Cordona (803 m) along the ancient path to the hamlet of Sessarego and Mount Rotondo (789 m). The beaches alternate with deep and characteristic cliffs. It is possible to practice surfing there. The hinterland is typical of eastern Liguria, partly with strips of olive groves, with the possibility of excursions.

The pebbles in the churchyard of the church of Mattarana

The pebbles in the churchyard of the church of Mattarana.
I always really like risseu, that particular decorative art that consists of placing river or sea pebbles (almost always black and white) to create a design.
In this case it is the decoration of the churchyard of the church of San Giovanni Battista in the small village of Mattarana in the province of La Spezia.

Some time ago, when for personal reasons I traveled many times on my scooter along the Aurelia road from Genoa to my Sestri Levante, I took many photos of the places along the road.
As in this case I found this beautiful villa, which overlooks the sea in one of the most beautiful spots of the whole road.
I really liked the decoration of the facade.
