A good spicy Thai soup with shrimp.
I hadn't been to Asia for several years and this was the first dish I ate when I returned.
I was in a hotel in Hong Kong and the restaurant for dinner was Thai.
Not being a fan of this type of food (but I admit that during this contract I started to appreciate, and a lot, some dishes) I took the most understandable thing on the menu: a soup with shrimp (Thai soup with shrimp).
I hadn't counted on the spiciness though... only later did I learn to ask for "non spicy".
In fact, after the first spoonful I practically had no more functioning taste buds.

Cibo malese.
Passeggiando per la via principale di Langkawi mi sono imbattuto in questa bancarella di cibo locale.
Non ho assaggiato nulla per cui non vi so dire molto su che tipo di pietanze fossero.
Tutto pero’ mi sembra fritto e comunque gustoso. Ci sono delle specie di polpette, dei fagottini e degli spiedini.
Magari la prossima volta che passo assaggio oppure chiedo cosa sono.

Kebab: not my ideal food.
My son asked me to write him something about a dish he recently ate in Malaysia: kebab.
As far as I know, it's a bit of a piece of junk... it's a bit like a hamburger, you can put anything in it.
The real kebab (kebab means skewer) originated in Turkey and other neighboring Muslim countries; consists of layers of mutton meat overlapping and alternating with mutton fat.
To cut it, you use a long, wide knife that cuts by trimming the meat closest to the fire and which is collected with a special spatula.
The cooked meat is wrapped in unleavened bread and served with the addition of spicy sauce.
From Turkey, this dish passed to Greece, which made it a dish for tourists or sailors like my son…
In Greece, however, instead of mutton, they use pork or chicken because they are less expensive, wrapped in this bread together with fried potatoes, salad and tomatoes mixed with a very low quality sauce… In Greece the dish is called Ghyros.
From Greece, the dish then passed to us… and there are people who buy it…

Not long ago there were several articles here about a kind of mafia that owns these small establishments where they said very low quality meat was served and there were health problems and other things…
That's all I know.
A piece of advice I give to my son: don't eat this food if you can!

Ancora una foto di cibo asiatico gustato nella Chinatown di Singapore.
Anche se ho messo il titolo in inglese spero che tutti abbiate capito di cosa si tratta: pollo alla griglia con verdure e riso.
Non e’ proprio un barbecue all’italiana o all’americana (con dei bei pezzi di carne interi cotti sulla fiamma viva) ma e’ asian style.
Se vi piace il tipo di cucina pero’, devo dirvi che era molto gustoso.

Gamberoni alla griglia.
In Thailandia una cosa che non manca mai nei ristoranti sono gamberi (in questo caso gamberoni), aragoste e granchi.
Li puoi scegliere quasi sempre dagli acquari e li paghi al peso.
Poi te li cucinano e puoi scegliere tu se alla griglia oppure in altre maniere.
RIsultato comunque eccellente. Per questo piatto con a parte riso fritto e birra ho speso 500 bath (tipo 15 euro).

Cibo di strada cambogiano.
Nel mercato coperto di Sihanoukville alla scoperta del cibo di strada (street food Cambogiano).
C’e’ un po’ di tutto: dagli splendidi banconi di frutta esotica alla carne fresca passando per il pesce e i dolciumi.
Comunque molte bancarelle sono da stomaci forti (visto l’odore non proprio sano che proveiva ad esempio dalla carne).

Prima volta che esco in Cambogia e vado a visitare uno dei posti piu’ dipici della citta’: il suo mercato.
Tanta frutta, un po’ di cibo di strada, tanto pesce, carne (ma non era molto invitante il banco del macellaio), magliette ed altre cose taroccate a gogo, e tantissimo oro (o comunque tantissime bancarelle che vendevano collane ed anelli d’orati).

Pad Thai, la insalata tipica thailandese.
Uno dei piatti tipici thailandesi e’ questa insalata stuzzicante con pollo e germogli di soia.
Ci sono diverse ricette ed ingredienti mixati e magari leggermente differenti da posto a posto. In questo caso, il piatto e’ stato mangiato a Phuket, c’erano: germogli di soia, pollo, uova, noodles e qualche verdura.

A skewered kebab in Malaysia.
To tell the truth, I don't think it's one of the most beautiful photos on my site, but it was taken at a particular time: my first kebab. I ate it in Malaysia, in Langkawi, and I have to tell you that I liked it (so much so that I went to eat it again on my next cruise).
I would never have thought it, but now I'm not only a hamburger and chips eater, but also a kebab friend...

The most famous type of kebab in the world is probably the döner kebab. The fact that in Turkey it is also called with an expression that means “walking kebab”, due to the habit of eating it even while walking down the street, has nothing to do with its name, since döner kebab can be translated as “rotating kebab”, with reference to the rotating vertical spit on which the meat is skewered and browned, making it rotate on the axis of the rotisserie.
