The roofs of the city of Cadiz seen from the ship

I tetti della città di Cadice visti dalla nave

The rooftops of the city of Cadiz seen from the ship.
In the heart of the Costa de la Luz, lies the picturesque city of Cadiz, a town overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and famous for its unique rooftops. The rooftops of Cadiz are not just architectural elements, but real spectacles that narrate the history and culture of this fascinating Spanish city.
The rooftops of Cadiz are a mosaic of shapes, colors and architectural styles. The buildings, often characterized by white facades, overlook narrow and winding streets, creating an urban labyrinth that develops in harmony with the topography of the city. The rooftops themselves, in many cases, are flat and offer spectacular panoramic terraces overlooking the sea or the charming old town.

The architecture of the roofs of Cadiz is steeped in Moorish influences, reflecting the history of the city that was under Muslim rule for centuries. The characteristic terraced roofs, often decorated with potted plants and even small gardens, create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. The red or brown tiles contribute to a fascinating play of colors that blends with the blue sky of the Costa de la Luz.
Every corner of the city offers a unique view of the roofs of Cadiz. From the bell tower of the Cathedral of Cadiz, the panorama opens onto a sea of roofs, with churches and domes emerging picturesquely. The crowded squares and charming alleys offer unexpected views, providing an unforgettable visual experience.
The roofs of Cadiz are also witness to the cultural fervor of the city. During the summer months, many terraces come alive with nightlife, becoming the perfect places to enjoy an evening under the stars or to watch the sunset over the Atlantic. These roofs become the stage for cultural events, concerts and parties that make Cadiz a vibrant and lively place.

In conclusion, the roofs of Cadiz are much more than just architectural coverings. They are the visual expression of the history, culture and timeless beauty of this fascinating Spanish city. Every visit to Cadiz is a journey through the picturesque peaks that make this destination one of a kind.

Here's where the town is located:

It is probably the oldest city founded in the western Mediterranean area by the Phoenicians in the 11th century BC, although its birth is now officially dated back to the end of the 8th century BC.
Founded with the original name of Gadir (in Phoenician: Gdr, fortress, with the same etymology as Agadir in Morocco) on what was once a small archipelago and now a single island, to exploit the rich trade routes with the Atlantic Ocean in the copper and tin trade. In ancient Greece it was known as Gadeira and in the times of the Roman Empire as Gades from which the current gentilic name of gaditano derives.

The wooden bridge of Flam in Norway

Il ponte in legno di Flam in Norvegia

The Flam Wooden Bridge in Norway.
Nestled in the majestic mountains of Norway, the picturesque village of Flam is famous not only for its breathtaking scenery but also for its charming wooden bridge. This bridge, which spans the Flam River, has become a local icon, a symbol of the connection between man and nature.
The Flam Wooden Bridge, with its elegant and rustic architecture, blends in perfectly with its surroundings. Its solid wooden beams rise towards the sky, while the interwoven railings create an artistic effect that captures the attention of anyone who passes over it. The choice of wood as the main material is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also a tribute to the Norwegian building tradition, which has made wise use of natural resources for centuries.
In addition to its visual beauty, the Flam Bridge plays a fundamental role in the life of the local community. By connecting the two banks of the river, it facilitates the daily transit of residents and visitors, creating a tangible connection between people and the surrounding nature. The feeling of walking on this bridge is a unique experience, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Norway.
During the warmer seasons, the bridge becomes a meeting point for locals and tourists, offering a scenic space to admire the surrounding landscape. During the winter, however, the bridge takes on a different charm, with snow gently settling on the wooden beams, creating an enchanting picture.
The construction of the Flam wooden bridge is also an example of ecological engineering, with the aim of minimising the impact on the surrounding environment. The architects have cleverly integrated the bridge into the natural topography, avoiding disturbances and preserving the beauty of the place.

In conclusion, the Flam wooden bridge is much more than a simple crossing structure. It is a symbol of connection, union and respect for the environment. Crossing this bridge, you can experience a moment of quiet and contemplation, surrounded by the pristine beauty of Norway and the warmth of a community that values its history and its natural environment.

Flåm is a Norwegian village of about 500 inhabitants, at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord. The village is located in the municipality of Aurland, in the county of Vestland, Norway. It is touched by the European route E16. The valley of Flåm was formed by the thick layer of ice that remained in this area for millions of years: the erosion of the glacier made the land sink, creating the deep and wide valleys that attract a large number of tourists every year.

One of the painted doors of Santa Maria street in Funchal, Portugal.
One of the last times I was in the town of Funchal, on the island of Madeira, by ship, I discovered this street in the old town by chance.
It is a special place where, in addition to finding many restaurants and bars, you can admire these doors (but not only those) painted in an artistic way.
The one in this photo, at number 1, represents the street itself.

The tower of the facade of the market of Tenerife.
For the first time since I have been sailing, last year I went to the market of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
As in almost all Spanish markets, in addition to being able to buy local products, you can also eat.
With some colleagues we then took a seat in one of the many fishmongers that cook fresh fish and seafood for you that you choose directly from the counter.
Exceptional!

Where is the fort located:

The archipelago is made up of two major islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, three smaller uninhabited islands, known as the Desertas, and two smaller islands, also uninhabited, called the Savage Islands. The largest island is Madeira. The archipelago, together with Cape Verde, the Azores and the Canaries, forms Macaronesia; the Azores and Madeira are part of Portugal, the Canaries are part of Spain and Cape Verde, once Portuguese, is now an independent republic.

Here's where the fjord is located:

The Geirangerfjord (Geirangerfjorden) is a fjord in the Norwegian region of Sunnmøre in the south of the county of Møre og Romsdal. It is a branch of the much larger Storfjorden and within it is the famous village of Geiranger. The fjord is one of the most visited natural sites in Norway and since 2005 it is included, together with the Nærøyfjord, in the List of World Heritage Sites drawn up by UNESCO. The presence of these two fjords in the list is however threatened by a plan to build some power lines through the fjord.

Where is the cathedral located:

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the Catholic cathedral of Funchal, Portugal, and the seat of the Diocese of Funchal. It is located in the center of the city, not far from the marina, in the area called Campo del Duca. Its construction began in the late 1400s. It was the first important church built on the island. Previously, there was a church near the beach of Calhau, but as the number of inhabitants increased thanks to the flourishing sugar cane trade, the church could no longer accommodate all the faithful, so it was decided to build a larger one in the center of the city.
