Seagulls in port seen from the ship in Malaga. In all my life as a sailor, despite having docked there many times, I have never disembarked to visit the city of Malaga. In fact, in the first years at sea, every time I was in port there, some unfortunate event always happened and I started not to go out and continued to do so over the years out of superstition. Even though it is a beautiful city, I know, as a good sailor, not to go out. However, from the top of the ship, I took several photos like this one which portrays a very long row of seagulls on a retaining wall of the port.

L’insegna dell’hotel San Pietro a Sestri Levante.

The Moor Fountain in Piazza Navona in Rome The Fontana del Moro is one of the most famous fountains in Rome and is located in Piazza Navona, one of the most famous squares in the city. The square is famous for its elongated shape and the three fountains that decorate it. The Fontana del Moro is located on the southern side of the square and was designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1575. However, the central statue depicting a Moor (i.e. an African figure) was added later by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1654. The sculpture of the Moor, to which the fountain owes its name, represents a bearded man sitting on a rock, intent on wrestling with a dolphin. The figure of the Moor was created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and added to the fountain to replace the original sculpture of a satyr that is now in the Capitoline Museums. The Fontana del Moro is characterized by a marble basin, supported by four dolphins, and four tritons emerging from the water, each supporting a dolphin. The fountain is one of the main attractions of Piazza Navona and contributes to the artistic and historical character of this public space. Interestingly, Piazza Navona itself is built on the site of an ancient Roman stadium, known as the Stadium of Domitian. The square has become a lively and crowded place, frequented by tourists and residents, and often hosts cultural events and fairs throughout the year.

Immediately after the restoration of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, completed in 1570, work began on a secondary underground branch of the conduit, in order to reach the area of the ancient Campo Marzio, one of the most populous areas of Rome, and the construction of a certain number of fountains was consequently also planned. Among the first were commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII, in 1574, to Giacomo Della Porta, the two placed at the ends of Piazza Navona, of which the Fontana del Moro is the one located on the southern side of the square.

A succulent Casatiello cooked on board. Casatiello is a typical dish of the Italian culinary tradition, particularly of the Campania region. It is a bread enriched with cheese, cured meats and eggs, often prepared during the Easter holidays. Some time ago, the Chef on board had a couple prepared for some special occasions. The main ingredients of casatiello include flour, yeast, cheese (typically pecorino or parmesan), cured meats such as salami or bacon, and eggs. The preparation involves the creation of a dough for the bread which is then enriched with grated cheese and cubes of cured meats. The dough is wrapped around whole eggs, symbolizing rebirth and spring, and is then baked in the oven. Casatiello can have different shapes and sizes depending on local traditions. In some cases, it is prepared as a sort of braid around the eggs, while in other regions it can take a more round shape. The outer crust is usually golden and crunchy, while the inside is soft thanks to the presence of cheese and eggs. This dish is very popular during the Easter holidays, when traditional Italian cuisine is often characterized by symbolic dishes rich in religious meaning. Casatiello is often shared between family and friends during Easter celebrations, helping to create a festive and convivial atmosphere.

Casatiello, unlike similar products such as tòrtano, is typical of Easter, from which it borrows its symbolism: the strips of bread arranged to enclose the eggs half-submerged in the dough represent the cross on which Jesus died while the ring-shaped appearance is a reference to the cyclical nature of the Easter resurrection.

Considered by historiography and in the mass culture of the 20th century as the main Italian national hero, he began his travels around the world as an officer of merchant ships, and then became a long-distance captain. His most famous enterprise was the victorious expedition of the Thousand that led to the annexation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to the nascent Kingdom of Italy, a central episode in the process of unification of the new nation.
