Burano is a town of 2,270 inhabitants that stands on four islands in the northern Venetian lagoon. It is part of the municipality of Venice and in particular of the municipality of Venice-Murano-Burano. It is connected by a bridge to the island of Mazzorbo, which has become a sort of appendix. The town is known for its typical brightly colored houses and for the centuries-old artisan needlework of Burano lace.

Hexadactyly in a painting in Genoa

La esadattilia in un dipinto in Santa Maria in Castello a Genova

Hexadactyly in a painting in Santa Maria in Castello in Genoa.
Do you know what hexadactyly is? To tell the truth, you can understand that it has something to do with six (hex) and fingers (dactyly) but I didn't know, before doing some research, that there was some mystery about it hidden in pictorial art.
The photo in this post is a detail of a painting, the Annunciation by Giovanni Mazone preserved in Santa Maria in Castello, in which one of the characters (in the left part of the left part of the polyptych depicting Saint John the Baptist and the apostle James the Greater) one of the Saints has feet with six toes.
I discovered that in art it is customary to add a finger to saintly and excellent characters (and I remember that at the time, during the visit to the church, the guide had explained it) but digging I discovered that it is not always like this and there is a sort of mystery in these depictions (here is a starting point for further study).

The polyptych of the Annunciation was executed in 1470 for the chapel of the same name in the church of Santa Maria di Castello in Genoa. The elaborate gilded wooden frame was executed by Mazone himself with the clear intent of reviving the elements of Gothic architecture. The compositions of the predella represent four episodes of the life of Mary: the Marriage of the Madonna and her meeting with Elizabeth; the birth of Jesus; the adoration of the Magi; the flight into Egypt and the purification of the B. V. Annunziata.

Some buildings overlooking the Rambla in Barcelona.
Some time ago I stopped by ship in Barcelona, the very famous Spanish city overlooking the Mediterranean, and what an opportunity to take a walk on the Rambla, the famous pedestrian street that crosses the center of the city?
In addition to being a beautiful tree-lined avenue full of street artists and restaurants for tourists, I like to observe the beautiful buildings that overlook it: every time I discover a new one!

La Rambla is one of the most emblematic places in the city, very popular all year round with both tourists and locals, and has different names in its different sections, which is why it is sometimes called in the plural Les Rambles in Catalan and Las Ramblas in Castilian. The word rambla comes from the Arabic raml (sand) and designates, as in other Spanish cities, a street created from a dry, buried or covered watercourse.

The small via Giuseppe Garibaldi in Sestri

La piccola via poco conosciuta chiamata Giuseppe Garibaldi a Sestri

The little, little-known street called Giuseppe Garibaldi in Sestri Levante.
One of the alleys perhaps less known, or at least less frequented, in my Sestri Levante.
If it weren't for that beautiful fish, painted on the facade of the building in Piazza Matteotti, almost no one would notice it.
Instead, I really enjoy walking along it!

Go see my article with my personal ranking of the restaurants where I ate the best ravioli al ragù in the Province of Genoa di Levante.

Where is the restaurant located:

Ligurian cuisine is made up of dishes from the culinary tradition of Liguria, a region that uses ingredients linked both to local production (such as preboggion, a mixture of wild herbs) and to imports from areas with which Ligurians have had frequent contact over the centuries (such as Sardinian pecorino, one of the ingredients of pesto).
A poor cuisine, typical of country people, mountaineers and sailors, made of simple, common and cheap foods, which has however become expensive, refined and full of ancient glories.

The name of the genus, adopted by Linnaeus in 1753 and meaning “passion flower” (from the Latin passio = passion and flos = flower), was attributed to it by the Jesuit missionaries in 1610, due to the similarity of some parts of the plant to the religious symbols of the passion of Jesus: the tendrils to the whip with which he was flagellated, the three styles to the nails, the stamens to the hammer, the corolla rays to the crown of thorns.
