The sbatacchio arches between the houses in the village of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre. Walking through the Ligurian villages you often see these architectural structures that connect the houses in the alleys. These arches, called sbatacchio arches, are elements built to increase the stability of the buildings especially when the distance between the walls is small (and in Liguria it is almost a constant).

La stretta via, chiamata caruggio, che attraversa il borgo di Moneglia in Liguria. Il bel caruggio del borgo marinaro di Moneglia, chiamato via Vittorio Emanuele, a me piace molto. Già un paio di volte sono venuto a pranzo nella cittadina e, a quell’ora, ho sempre avuto la possibilità di fotografare senza passanti. Colori caldi, via incurvata e molti archi (archi di sbatacchio): tutti i miei soggetti preferiti per le foto!

Un bel vicoletto del centro storico di Salò in Lombardia. Passeggendo nel bel centro storico della cittadina di Salò mi sono imbattuto in questo bel vicoletto, con i suoi vistosi archi di sbatacchio, che tanto mi ha ricordato i caruggi della mia terra, la Liguria.

The slam arches in an alley in Brugnato, Liguria Finally, after many years of research, I managed to learn something more about these arches that connect the houses in the narrow and typical alleys of Ligurian villages. Thanks to my friend Marina who finally revealed to me on one of my social media that they are called slam arches and have the function of helping the stability and resistance of buildings especially when they are a short distance from each other. This beautiful alley with several slamming arches is in Brugnato, the beautiful medieval village in the province of La Spezia.

Between the 7th and 8th centuries, following the conquest of Liguria by the Lombards, the Columban monks of Bobbio, who followed the rule of Saint Columbanus and continued their work of evangelization, built a monastery that over time grew to become a religious and economic nerve center. The birth of Brugnato is therefore linked to the foundation of the abbey which, like other monastic sites in Liguria and northern Italy, depended on the abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio. Vicoli ed archi di Borgio Verezzi. Camminando tra le stratte vie e carruggi del borgo di Verezzi, in provincia di Savona, ci si può perdere con la fantasia e con la bellezza dei particolari. Il borgo in sé non è molto grande ma forse è proprio questa la sua bellezza. Guardate questo violetto con gli archi, visti in molti borghi storici come Finalborgo ma anche a Varese Ligure e Chiavari, che uniscono le case.

The municipal territory is made up of the two hamlets of Borgio (municipal seat) and Verezzi and the Verezzi nuclei of Crosa, Piazza, Poggio and Roccaro for a territorial surface of 2.73 km².
