The architectural layout remained unchanged until the late sixteenth century; from that time onwards new noble palaces were built within the walls in the contemporary Renaissance style. The choice of the new architectural style was especially evident in the main streets Ravaschieri and Stefano Rivarola where palaces very similar to other buildings in Genoa were erected or revised. Guglie ed archi del Duomo di Milano. Salendo in cima al duomo si rimane immersi in un labirinto di archi, guglie e merletti in pietra. Uno spettacolo persino difficile da fotografare.

A glimpse of Brugnato, a beautiful Ligurian village. Another beautiful corner of the splendid village, in the province of La Spezia, of Brugnato. A small, very well-kept and well-maintained village located in the Val di Vara that I absolutely recommend you visit.

Between the 7th and 8th centuries, following the conquest of Liguria by the Lombards, the Columban monks of Bobbio, who followed the rule of Saint Columbanus and continued their work of evangelization, built a monastery that over time grew to become a religious and economic nerve center. The birth of Brugnato is therefore linked to the foundation of the abbey which, like other monastic sites in Liguria and northern Italy, depended on the abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio. Una bella veduta del caruggio di Moneglia in Liguria. Il bel caruggio del borgo di Moneglia, ultimo comune a Levante della provincia di Genova. Mi piace molto l’arco di sbatacchio che collega i due palazzi in fondo.

Uno vicolo colorato della città di Padova. Passeggiando per la cittadina di Padova ho percorso questo bel vicolo con i sui portici e mi ha fatto ricordare molto i carruggi liguri tanto familiari a me. A dirla tutta a Padova ci sono moltissimi portici e ho scoperto che è la seconda città europea per estensione di questi.

The slam arches in an alley in Brugnato, Liguria Finally, after many years of research, I managed to learn something more about these arches that connect the houses in the narrow and typical alleys of Ligurian villages. Thanks to my friend Marina who finally revealed to me on one of my social media that they are called slam arches and have the function of helping the stability and resistance of buildings especially when they are a short distance from each other. This beautiful alley with several slamming arches is in Brugnato, the beautiful medieval village in the province of La Spezia.

I portici di via Nuova Italia a Lavagna. Non sono estesi come quelli di Chiavari ma anche a Lavagna c’è una bella serie di bei portici. Questi, per esempio, sono quelli di via Nuova Italia la via carrabile parallela al caruggio che taglia in due la cittadina rivierasca.

A portico in Varese Ligure photographed in black and white. I think it's been years since I took this photo in the village of Varese Ligure and I've never had the chance to publish it. It represents one of the many porticos of the famous round square in the center of the village (also called Borgo Rotondo).

Borgo Rotondo in the historic center of Varese. Commissioned by the Fieschi family for the control and defense of the Varese territory, it is made up of identical stone houses arranged along the perimeter which, with an elliptical shape, enclose the two main squares (Piazza Fieschi and Piazza Castello), where the commercial activities, warehouses and laboratories were located in the underlying porticoes. Una Madonnina in via Cittadella per salire alla Penisola di Sestri Levante. Salendo sulla penisola di Sestri Levante, percorrendo la meno famosa via Cittadella, si passeggia sotto un arco che nasconde e ripara una piccola edicola votiva che rappresenta una Madonnina.
