The Royal Gate in Finalborgo

La Porta Reale a Finalborgo

The Royal Gate in Finalborgo.
Although there are several entrances or gates to enter the ancient and splendid village of Finalborgo, the one called Royal is certainly the most beautiful and well-known.
Partly because of the frescoes on the outside, partly because there are the old walls and partly because you can glimpse, just behind the walls, the church and the bell tower of San Biagio.
A sight that welcomes you!

The town was developed in the Finalese hinterland, not directly on the sea to be more protected against possible Saracen landings on the coast, in an easily defensible place: the confluence of the Aquila torrent with the Pora torrent, whose riverbeds form a single natural moat, later reinforced by the city walls, which defended the town on the east-south-west sides, while the northern side of the town was naturally protected by the spur of the Becchignolo hill.

The beautiful village of Verici in Casarza Ligure

The beautiful village of Verici in Casarza Ligure.
Behind Sestri Levante (but in the municipality of Casarza Ligure) there is the small but very beautiful village of Verici.
A few villas and a few alleys make up this small town (which is actually called Bruschi).
I was there a few weeks ago along the path that goes from Villa Tassani down to Santa Margherita di Fossa Lupara, very pretty.

Arches in the village of Moneglia

Archi nel borgo di Moneglia

Arches in the village of Moneglia.
I think that in the last 15 years I had not been to Moneglia, even though it is the municipality that borders mine to the east and the last in the province of Genoa.
I was surprised by the alleys and carruggi that I found.
Like in this shot in which you can see two arches that join some houses in an alley in the center.
The yellow color of the facades then makes the view even more photogenic.

The ancient toponym of Moneglia (ad Monilia) appears in the Tavola Peutingeriana, a copy of the military map of the Roman Empire (11th – 12th century) preserved in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, discovered by the antiquarian of Augsburg, Corrado Peutinger, in the sixteenth century.

It was with the Republic of Genoa that Lerici began to assume a more important role.
After having purchased Porto Venere and made it a strategic base for the control of the gulf of La Spezia, Genoa also came into possession of Lerici, negotiating with the Lords of Vezzano and Arcola, who were the feudal lords of the locality.

The view of the Sassi of Matera

La vista sui Sassi di Matera

The view of the Sassi of Matera.
If you come to Matera you cannot help but photograph the landscape that can be seen from one of the many terraces and or belvederes that are there.
One of the strong points of the city is that having been formed (excuse the term) along the Sassi, that is, along the typical limestone valleys, they can be observed well from many points up high.

The small port of Tellaro, a splendid seaside village

Il porticciolo di Tellaro, splendido borgo marinaro

The small port of Tellaro, a splendid seaside village.
First time in my life that I have been able to visit the village of Tellaro, pearl of the Gulf of Poets, in the La Spezia area.
Its small port seen almost from the sea (from the small dock I believe for summer boats) has little to envy to other more famous ones in Liguria and Italy.
It is no coincidence that it is part of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.

Tellaro is the easternmost hamlet of the municipality of Lerici, in the province of La Spezia. It has been reviewed as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
The town is a small seaside village, perched on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of La Spezia. A destination for many Italian and foreign artists, Mario Soldati found a home here during the long years of his old age.

In Liguria quasi ogni borgo è splendido e fotogenico.
