Horses are some of the animals that are not lacking in Palermo. In this shot in the foreground a couple of tourist carriages, ready to take a panoramic tour of the city, and in the background, above the facade of the Politeama Garibaldi, the bronze statues of some prancing horses!

In 1865 the Municipality of Palermo decided to build the Politeama. Since the cost was higher than the expected amount, the banker Carlo Galland was contacted and he committed to building “three markets according to the designs of the architect Damiani and to build, in the place that the Municipality will indicate, a Politeama according to the art plan and designs prepared by the Technical Office of the Municipality” (Contract specifications between the Municipality and Mr. Carlo Galland, Piedmontese, for the construction of the markets and Theatre, 1866).
