La statua di San Giacomo a cavallo a Barcellona.
Arrivato in una delle piazze più importanti, amministrativamente parlado, di Barcellona ho fotografato questa bella statua di San Giacomo (che in catalano si chiana Sant Jaume).
Leggo in rete che la statua è stata scolpita dallo scultore Manuel Fuxà nel 1902 per decorare il palazzo della Caixa d’Estalvis i Mont de Pietat.

Dove si trova la statua:

Giacomo il Maggiore, detto anche Giacomo di Zebedeo (Betsaida, … – Gerusalemme, 44), fa parte del gruppo dei dodici apostoli di Gesù, secondo quanto riportato dai Vangeli e dagli Atti degli Apostoli. È detto «Maggiore» per distinguerlo dall’apostolo omonimo, Giacomo di Alfeo, detto «Minore» o “il fratello del Signore”.

Percorrendo la via (via Dante) che dal Duomo di Milano corre fino al Castello Sforzesco, si arriva in questa bello slargo, Largo Cairoli, che ospita una bella statua di Giuseppe Garibaldi a cavallo.

Considerato dalla storiografia e nella cultura di massa del XX secolo il principale eroe nazionale italiano, iniziò i suoi spostamenti per il mondo come ufficiale di navi mercantili, per poi diventare capitano di lungo corso. Mi affascinano sempre le rappresentazioni, in questo caso un bassorilievo, di San Giorgio che sconfigge il drago.

Gli abitanti erano atterriti nel vedere il drago avvicinarsi, ma Giorgio li tranquillizzò, dicendo loro di non aver timore poiché «Iddio mi ha mandato a voi per liberarvi dal drago: se abbraccerete la fede in Cristo, riceverete il battesimo e io ucciderò il mostro». Allora il re e la popolazione si convertirono e il cavaliere uccise il drago e lo fece portare fuori dalla città, trascinato da quattro paia di buoi.

The many horses present in the city of Palermo

The many horses present in the city of Palermo.
Horses are some of the animals that are not lacking in Palermo. In this shot in the foreground a couple of tourist carriages, ready to take a panoramic tour of the city, and in the background, above the facade of the Politeama Garibaldi, the bronze statues of some prancing horses!

In 1865 the Municipality of Palermo decided to build the Politeama. Since the cost was higher than the expected amount, the banker Carlo Galland was contacted and he committed to building “three markets according to the designs of the architect Damiani and to build, in the place that the Municipality will indicate, a Politeama according to the art plan and designs prepared by the Technical Office of the Municipality” (Contract specifications between the Municipality and Mr. Carlo Galland, Piedmontese, for the construction of the markets and Theatre, 1866).
