Monumental staircase of the Botanical Park of Palazzo Rocca.
After many years of thinking about it, I finally managed to visit the Villa Rocca Park in Chiavari.
It is probably the most important closed park in Eastern Tigullio and together with Palazzo Rocca they constitute a beautiful example of a noble villa.
The park itself, even though there is an entrance fee (1 euro per person), did not particularly excite me.
The monumental staircase that took the visitor to see the lakes and caves of the park (which is currently not passable) was perhaps the most beautiful element to photograph.
The view of the square in front is also splendid as you go up and I will demonstrate this to you in a later post.

The church of San Giovanni Battista in Chiavari.
The religious building in the centre of Chiavari built at the end of 1100 and which houses the crucifix of the Black Christ, very famous in the city.
The simple façade in an equally simple churchyard surrounded by the splendid little streets with the typical porticoes of Chiavari.

Here is where the church is located:

The Black Christ is a wooden crucifix kept in the parish church of San Giovanni Battista. It is considered miraculous.
It comes from the church of the Disciplinanti, destroyed by fire in 1600. Only the crucifix was saved from the fire, which, according to pious tradition, remained black since it was impossible to clean it.

Il maschio del Castello di Chiavari

Il maschio del Castello di Chiavari.
Ho da poco scoperto che quasi nel centro di Chiavari c’era un castello con questo splendido ed imponente maschio.
Si trova proprio alla fine di una salita raggiungibile sia dall’ospedale sia da dietro al carruggio.

Here's where the castle is located:

The castle was built between 1146 and 1147, one of the first erected in the geographical area of the Gulf of Tigullio, on the hill overlooking the then fortified citadel of the seaside village of Clavari, today's Chiavari, to defend it and the surrounding valley.

The arches and columns of Rivarola street in Chiavari.
When we talk about arches and columns, but also about porticos, in Chiavari we always think of the Carrugio Dritto but it is not the only “monumental” street.
Via Rivarola also runs parallel, less frequented but equally rich in very photogenic views and corners.
Seeing is believing.

The architectural system remained unchanged until the late sixteenth century; from that time onwards new noble palaces were built within the walls in the contemporary Renaissance style. The choice of the new architectural style was especially evident in the main streets Ravaschieri and Stefano Rivarola where palaces very similar to other buildings in Genoa were erected or revised.

Le case in piazza Verdi a Chiavari

Case in piazza Verdi a Chiavari.
Passeggiando per la bella città di Chiavari non mi stanco mai di fotografare palazzi e portici.
Queste sono le case sul retro del carruggio Dritto, precisamente in piazza Verdi.
I colori accesi delle facciate che contrastano con il nero dell’ardesia delle colonne che reggono gli archi dei portici mi strabiliano sempre.

La chiesa di San Tommaso del Curlo a Leivi

La chiesa di San Tommaso del Curlo a Leivi.
Facendo il sentiero delle Cinque Torri si passa di fronte a questa splendida chiesetta, appena sopra a Chiavari.
Quello che mi ha impressionato è il colore rosa della facciata e l’affresco (un poco rovinato purtroppo) sempre sulla facciata.
Un gioiellino. Sul retro poi c’è uno spiazzo attrezzato con tavolini da campeggio con vista sulla costa lato Levante.

I sempre affascinanti vicoli chiavaresi. Questo era il Carruggio Dritto in tempi di post lock down ed infatti potete vedere che non c’è molta gente che passeggia.

Grimaldi street in the historic center of Chiavari from under the arcades.
Walking along Via Vittorio Veneto in Chiavari I came across Via Grimaldi and tried to take a nice photo of this corner of the town.
Even though I live in a nearby town (Sestri Levante) I always like to take photos in Chiavari because I think you can take at least one photo for each arch!

La spiaggia di Preli a Chiavari

La spiaggia di Preli a Chiavari.
Un paio di settimane fa sono stato a passeggiare di giorno verso la nuova passeggiata di Chiavari, quella di Preli dove c’è stata la riqualificazione dell’area e della struttura della Colonia Fara.
Anche la spiaggetta non è poi così male anche se le barriere di scogli di fronte penalizzano un pochino la bellezza del mare a vantaggio della sicurezza durante le mareggiate.

Ho fatto anche un bel video del tratto della passeggiata:

La struttura, intitolata alla memoria del generale Gustavo Fara, fu commissionata dal Partito Nazionale Fascista nel 1935 come luogo e soggiorno di villeggiatura marinaro per bambini, da utilizzarsi prevalentemente nel periodo estivo.

L’interno del Santuario delle Grazie

L’interno del Santuario delle Grazie.
Non ero mai stato nella chiesa delle Grazie, sopra a Chiavari, e devo dire che è veramente uno splendido esempio di arte ligure.
I suoi bellissimi affreschi (di Teramo Piaggio e di Luca Cambiaso) oltre alle centinaia di ex voto presenti nella cappella antistante l’entrata principale.

Questo, invece, un bel video degli affreschi:

Secondo studi approfonditi sull’odierna struttura, le varie fasi che portarono ad un’evoluzione architettonica dell’edificio seguirono una precisa e logica scelta di “aggregazione”, nel senso che l’impianto subì le varie modifiche nei secoli senza il classico metodo della “sovrapposizione”, fenomeno comune di altri edifici religiosi del chiavarese e del territorio ligure, soprattutto nelle rivisitazioni barocche.
