The High Altar of the Church of Santo Stefano in Genoa. Many times I have been on the large terrace of this church to photograph via XX Settembre from above but very few times have I managed to enter this church. Some time ago, taking advantage of the event “Le chiese dei Rolli”, I was able to visit it and I was fascinated by it. The interior is very sparse but colossal.

The church of Santo Stefano (or abbey of Santo Stefano) is one of the best-known Christian places of worship in Genoa, and its parish community is part of the Vicariate of Carignano – Foce of the Archdiocese of Genoa. Situated on a hill overlooking the central Via XX Settembre, it was one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in the Ligurian capital. Continue and learn more on Wikipedia

The interior of the great Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna. One of the largest churches in Italy fascinates with its grandeur but also with its austerity. The red color of the bricks dominates. You cannot pass through Bologna and not visit this church.

The basilica dedicated to San Petronio, patron saint of Bologna, of which he was bishop in the first half of the 5th century, raises its front on the Piazza Maggiore, the political and historical center of the city. The construction of this basilica began in 1390 based on a project by Antonio di Vincenzo, who died when the work had just begun. At the beginning of the 16th century, Arduino Arriguzzi designed a completion of colossal proportions and without equal in the entire world. Continue and learn more on Basilicadisanpetronio.org

The former Convent of the Annunziata in Sestri Levante from an unusual perspective. When you arrive at the point where I took this photo, normally, your gaze and your lens point to the Bay of Silence. This time, however, I looked for a new perspective in the imposing Convent, built by the Dominican friars, which dominates the Bay.

The original convent was built in 1469 by the Dominican fathers, who had already established their base in the Genoese complex of Santa Maria di Castello since 1442. The structure is located on the extreme tip of the Sestri Levante peninsula, overlooking the sea on three sides: two towards the Baia del Silenzio and one towards the open sea of the Gulf of Tigullio. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Guard in Velva in the hinterland of Sestri Levante. Commonly called the Sanctuary of Velva, this church is also very well known in my area for the famous restaurant attached to the sanctuary. In the photo, in the foreground is the restaurant whose specialties are mushroom sauce and ravioli in abundance! Very often events are celebrated in the church which then continue in the restaurant!

The construction of a chapel was desired by the population of the hamlet of Velva and expressed their intention to the rector of the parish of San Torpete in Genoa, Monsignor Luigi Persoglio, who stayed in Velva during the summer. The latter suggested the idea of building a sanctuary. The works for the construction of the new place of worship in Velva were entrusted to the architect Maurizio Dufour during the 19th century, who had already created several architectural works in Genoa and Liguria. During the construction, a first wooden group of the Madonna della Guardia by the sculptor Antonio Canepa was made in 1892. Continue and learn more on Wikipedia

The famous St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City in Rome. One of the monuments that you can't miss visiting in the Eternal City is definitely St. Peter's Square, a symbol of Christianity in the world. I didn't remember there being so many tourists visiting... and to think that the last time I was there I even climbed to the top of the dome and I don't remember waiting in line that long.

The very famous square, a notable example of Baroque architecture and urban planning, is dedicated to the saint of the same name and is a daily meeting point for thousands of Catholic faithful from all over the world. The space of the square is made up of two parts: the first is shaped like an inverted trapezium whose longest side corresponds to the façade with specific perspective motivations (to cancel the great distance between the square and the basilica) and the second, larger, oval-shaped part with the Egyptian obelisk in the centre.

Continue and learn more on ziona.it

Hexadactyly in a painting in Santa Maria in Castello in Genoa. Do you know what hexadactyly is? To tell the truth, you can understand that it has something to do with six (hex) and fingers (dactyly) but I didn't know, before doing some research, that there was some mystery about it hidden in pictorial art. The photo in this post is a detail of a painting, the Annunciation by Giovanni Mazone preserved in Santa Maria in Castello, in which one of the characters (in the left part of the left part of the polyptych depicting Saint John the Baptist and the apostle James the Greater) one of the Saints has feet with six toes. I discovered that in art it is customary to add a finger to saintly and excellent characters (and I remember that at the time, during the visit to the church, the guide had explained it) but digging I discovered that it is not always like this and there is a sort of mystery in these depictions (here is a starting point for further study).

The polyptych of the Annunciation was executed in 1470 for the chapel of the same name in the church of Santa Maria di Castello in Genoa. The elaborate gilded wooden frame was executed by Mazone himself with the clear intent of reviving the elements of Gothic architecture. The compositions of the predella represent four episodes of the life of Mary: the Marriage of the Madonna and her meeting with Elizabeth; the birth of Jesus; the adoration of the Magi; the flight into Egypt and the purification of the B. V. Annunziata. Continue and learn more on Wikipedia

The High Altar and the apse of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. Some time ago I posted a very similar photo of the beautiful Florentine basilica, but which only portrayed the altar. In this shot, however, you can see the entire apse of Santa Croce with all its wonderful works of art!

The designs for the stained glass windows are also by Agnolo Gaddi, except for the highest oculi, which are older. The painted cross is by the Maestro di Figline, while the polyptych of the high altar is the result of a recomposition: the Madonna in the center is by Niccolò Gerini, while the Doctors of the Church are by Giovanni del Biondo and another unknown painter.
