The view from the terraces above Manarola in the Cinque Terre

The view from the terraces above Manarola to the Cinque Terre.
The beauty of the paths that connect the Cinque Terre, the five Ligurian villages famous throughout the world, is that of being able to go from the sea to the mountains in just a few minutes of walking.
Some sections are really challenging but the view is truly priceless.
You walk between terraces, the real ones built dry, and vineyards sometimes kissed by the sun other times refreshed by the sea breeze.
It's almost a paradise for trekking lovers!
I forgot: this is the section between Corniglia and Manarola perhaps the hardest of all!

Arriving in Manarola in the Cinque Terre

L'arrivo a Manarola alle Cinque Terre

Arriving in Manarola in the Cinque Terre.
Arriving in Manarola after having walked the long and tough path that reaches the hamlet of Volastra amply repays the effort that may have been lost among the many steps uphill.
When you are starting to descend there are at least a couple of passable roads; one of these takes you on a very steep descent, among the vineyards, almost sheer above the village.

Manarola, like the other Cinque Terre, is squeezed between the Ligurian Sea and the steep mountain range that separates from the Apennines near Monte Zatta and descends in a south-east direction, acting as a watershed between the Val di Vara and the coastal area. The village is located in the final stretch of the Groppo torrent valley.

The Roofs of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre

I tetti di Vernazza alle Cinque Terre

The roofs of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre.
An unusual view of the village of Vernazza, the most central of the Cinque Terre.
The houses clinging first to the hill and then to each other.
A spectacle from whatever point you photograph it.

Here is where Vernazza is located:

Coming from the west, Vernazza is the second of the villages that make up the Cinque Terre, in a bay between the municipalities of Monterosso al Mare and Riomaggiore. It also includes the next village of Corniglia, a hamlet of it. Its territory is also characterized by the typical terraces for growing vines, a morphological style that, according to an estimate, is developed for over 7,000 km of dry stone walls.

Terraces above Corniglia in the Cinque Terre

Terraces above Corniglia in the Cinque Terre.
Some call it heroic agriculture and from this shot you can understand why.
Even if we think back a few decades, when there weren't even the small racks that today, at least in part, facilitate the transport of people and things in some places.
Dry stone walls and terraces, created by man to cultivate the vineyard overlooking the sea.
In the background the village of Corniglia, the town in the center of the Cinque Terre.

Pictures of the Cinque Terre

Viti sospese sopra a Monterosso

Vines suspended above Monterosso.
The Cinque Terre, but practically all of Liguria, are difficult lands: few flat areas and many hills, if not even mountains, that drop sheer to the sea.
As almost everyone knows, Ligurian man, for centuries, has not given up cultivating the few lands that steal space on the steep sides of the hills, terracing as much as possible and planting vines and olive trees.
Very famous, from this point of view, is the coast of the Cinque Terre in Eastern Liguria.
Here, for example, you can see some vine plants just above Monterosso.

The small port of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre

The village of Vernazza seen from the marina.
The most classic photo of the famous Ligurian village of the Cinque Terre is certainly from above and more precisely from the path that starts from Monterosso and arrives in Vernazza.
But even from its marina you can take beautiful photos.
Like this one, taken a few months ago during a trip with a walk through all five villages.
