Located on the Castello hill, the first inhabited place in Genoa in ancient times, the church of Santa Maria di Castello is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in Genoa and one of the most intact and evocative Romanesque architectures in the city.

I palazzi che si affacciano su piazza Santa Brigida a Genova.
Una delle piazze più belle di Genova, famosa perché ospita i vecchi “truogoli” (i lavatoi pubblici), ma i cui palazzi sono molto belli.
A me piace soprattutto, oltre ai colori delle facciate, la serie di merletti (non sono sicuro che si chiamino così) che separano il piano terra dal primo piano.

In the centre of a small square that opens up into the maze of alleys between Via Balbi and Via Prè, surrounded by tall buildings, which were restored in the mid-1980s, are the “truogoli di Santa Brigida”, with an elegant metal roof, one of the few survivors of the numerous public wash houses that existed until the 1960s in every corner of the city.

The troughs, the ancient public wash houses, which still remain in this beautiful little square between via Pre and via Balbi.
It is impossible not to visit it if you have to go to university (the humanities ones) in Genoa.

Buildings on Twenty September street in Genoa seen from the churchyard of Santo Stefano.
Whenever I can, when I find myself on Via XX, I go up to the church of Santo Stefano for a moment to photograph the street and the buildings from above.
Not everyone knows that going up Via XX, just after the Monumental Bridge, there is a small staircase (which does not promise anything good) that leads to the splendid church of Santo Stefano and to the churchyard which in reality is nothing more than a terrace on the main street.

L’abside della chiesa della Santissima Annunziata di Portoria a Genova.
Qualche tempo fa, quasi per caso, ho saputo che durante le feste natalizie a Genova si organizzavano delle visite guidate in molte chiese cittadine (alcune normalmente chiuse al pubblico). Una iniziativa sulla falsa riga dei Rolli.
Questo era l’interno della splendida chiesa ed in particolare l’abside poligonale, decorato dall’artista Giovan Battista Castello detto “il Bergamasco” con scene raffiguranti il Cristo giudicante e gli Evangelisti.

La chiesa dell’Annunziata, la cui storia è strettamente legata a quella dello scomparso ospedale di Pammatone fu costruita con l’annesso convento, a partire dal 1488 dai Minori francescani, che la officiarono fino al 1538, quando ad essi subentrarono i Cappuccini, ancora oggi presenti nella chiesa, che prestarono assistenza spirituale ai malati nell’adiacente ospedale di Pammatone fino alla sua chiusura negli anni venti del Novecento.

La cupola del Santuario della Guardia alle spalle di Genova.
Diverso tempo fa sono stato a fare una bella visita al Santuario della Guardia, appena alle spalle di Genova.
La chiesa ha un aspetto semplice e poco sfarzoso ma sulla volta e nella cupola le decorazioni sono comunque molto belle e di fronte spicca lo stemma di Genova.

The houses behind the Marassi district in Genoa.
Behind the Marassi district, going up towards Fort Quezzi, apartment blocks and council houses appear. I think that continuous series of houses at the top is called the “Biscione” but I’m not sure.
Below, you can see the mother house of the nuns of Our Lady of the Refuge in Monte Calvario, Brignoline.

Il cortile a due piani del palazzo Doria-Tursi di Genova.
Uno dei palazzi più visitati di Genova per due motivi: è la attuale sede del comune e perché parte dei musei di Strada Nuova.
Ho fotografato questo splendido edificio, che si trova come molti altri palazzi dei Rolli, in via Garibaldi (chiamata in precedenza Strada Nuova) qualche mese fa quando sono stato nel capoluogo per i Rolli Days.

Questo è il sito istituzionale del palazzo: museidigenova.it.

Il palazzo Doria-Tursi, o palazzo Niccolò Grimaldi, è un edificio sito in via Garibaldi al civico 9 nel centro storico di Genova, inserito il 13 luglio del 2006 nella lista tra i 42 palazzi iscritti ai Rolli di Genova, divenuti in tale data Patrimonio dell’umanità dell’UNESCO. L’edificio è sede del Comune di Genova e fa parte del polo museale della città.
