Martino Doria, who entered the Benedictine friars of the Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte after becoming a widower, obtained permission from Bishop Sigifredo to build a small church on land owned by the family near the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The dedication of the new church to San Matteo was linked to his profession as a tax collector, just like the Dorias, who therefore made him their patron.

Il castello D’Albertis è una dimora storica di Genova, sede del Museo delle culture del mondo e del Museo delle musiche dei popoli. Fatto edificare nel 1886 su di un antico bastione delle Mura trecentesche dal capitano di mare Enrico Alberto D’Albertis, il castello è oggi una delle case-museo più apprezzate del capoluogo ligure.

A creuza that leads to Boccadasse, the famous Genoese village.
To go down to the village of Boccadasse you have to go down some narrow and steep brick streets, very typical of Liguria, which are called creuze.
This is one of these (to be precise the name is via Aurora) and from the opposite promenade of Corso Italia it goes down to the village's little beach.

Boccadasse (Boca d’azë or Bocadâze in Genoese) is an ancient seaside village in the city of Genoa, which is part of the Albaro district. In the current administrative division of the municipality of Genoa it is therefore included in the Municipio VIII – Medio Levante, which in addition to Albaro also includes the Foce and San Martino districts.

Il chiostro dell’Abbazia di San Matteo a Genova.
Quando da piazza de Ferrari si scende nei vicoli si incontra subito (se si sceglie il budello giusto) una splendida piazza omonima alla chiesa.
In questa piazza c’è una splendida piccola abbazia, voluta dalla famiglia Doria, in cui annesso c’è uno splendido chiostro (tra l’altro visitabile gratuitamente quando la chiesa è aperta).

The interior of the Church of San Pietro in Banchi in Genoa.
I have passed through Piazza Banchi several times and have already photographed the church from the outside several times (and if I am not mistaken there are at least two posts with the church and the square).
The last time I passed by the door and the gate were open and, for the first time, I managed to enter and I was impressed by this little church, small but very well-kept and with a truly predominant white color in the interior.
As you can see in the altar, in the apse and in the ceiling.

The church of San Pietro in Banchi in its current structure dates back to the end of the sixteenth century, when it was built, starting from a project from 1572, on the site where centuries before there had already been a religious building, destroyed at the end of the fourteenth century during the factional struggles between the Guelphs and Ghibellines.

Peccato solamente che l’orario della foto (per la luce) e la poca nitidezza dell’aria non ha reso molto chiara la foto.

Affacciata sul Mar Ligure, Genova è stata la capitale di una delle repubbliche marinare dall’XI secolo al 1797. In particolare, dal XII al XV secolo, la città ha svolto un ruolo di primo piano nel commercio in Europa, diventando, all’epoca, una delle più grandi potenze navali del continente e considerata tra le città più ricche del mondo. Fu anche soprannominata la Superba da Francesco Petrarca.

La Lanterna di Genova al tramonto in controluce.
La Lanterna domina gli sguardi e le attenzioni di tutti i genovesi ed i visitatori.
Ovviamente attira anche tutti gli obiettivi delle macchine fotografiche ed il mio non poteva mancare.
Se non ricordo male (purtroppo scatto sempre molte foto che poi non ho tempo di inserire a breve tempo dallo scatto e succede che non ne ricordi bene i dettagli successivamente) l’avevo scattata da uno dei belvedere di Corso Carbonara o Castelletto.

La Lanterna di Genova (o semplicemente “Lanterna”, in genovese a Lanterna de Zena o a Lanterna) è il faro portuale del capoluogo della Liguria, la città un tempo definita la Superba o Dominante dei mari.
Per secoli strumento indispensabile alla navigazione notturna delle navi in entrata e uscita dal porto, la Lanterna è anche il monumento simbolo cittadino, quasi un totem alla genovesità, e come tale fa parte della storia della città.

Palazzo Nicolò Lomellini or Palazzo Lauro in Genoa.
One of the many historic buildings in Genoa, registered in the renowned Rolli, is this beautiful building near Piazza della Nunziata.
Built by the Lomellini family as early as 1500 and belonging to the famous shipowner Achille Lauro from whom it also later took the name of Palazzo Lauro.

Founded by Nicolò Lomellini, who enlarged the garden in 1567, there is evidence of its reconstruction in the following century. It is listed among the most superb palaces of 1797 in the name of Giuseppe Lomellini, who shortly after sold it to the Marquis Giacomo Durazzo. In the 19th century there were numerous changes of ownership between the Durazzo and De Mari families.

The entrance to the cemetery of Nostra Signora del Monte in Genoa.
Some time ago, with my friends, we went for a tour (one of the many that we sometimes enjoy doing) to discover Genoa.
This time, starting from the Brignole train station, we headed towards Levante.
We then passed through the San Fruttuoso neighborhood and then decided to go up through the Villa Imperiale park and reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte, located on the hill overlooking the San Fruttuoso and Marassi neighborhoods.
From there we continued along the mule track to the Quezzi neighborhood and, a few meters from the sanctuary, we came across the cemetery of the religious complex of which I photographed the entrance (behind the gate).

Uno scorcio di via San Vincenzo a Genova.
Anche in centro a Genova si riescono a realizzare ottimi scatti.
Questa infatti è via San Vincenzo, nel cuore pulsante della Superba. Tutti i lavoratori del terzo settore infatti, o almeno tutti quelli che arrivano in centro tramite il treno, passano di qui almeno un paio di volte al giorno.
