The active volcano Cumbre Vieja in La Palma

Il vulcano attivo Cumbre Vieja a La Palma

The active volcano Cumbre Vieja in La Palma.
The Cumbre Vieja volcano, located on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, is known for its significant volcanic activity and its impact on the environment and local communities. Its latest eruption, which began on September 19, 2021 and ended on December 13, 2021, was one of the longest and most devastating in the island's history.
The 2021 eruption was the first on the island since 1971 and had a huge impact. Lava covered over 1,000 hectares, destroying more than 3,000 buildings and forcing the evacuation of around 7,000 people. The lava flow reached the sea, creating a new peninsula and an extensive system of lava tubes.
The eruption had devastating consequences for the environment and the local economy. Banana, avocado and grape crops, which are essential to the island’s economy, have been severely damaged. In addition, air quality has been compromised due to toxic gas emissions, causing respiratory problems among the local population.
Authorities have established an exclusion zone around the lava flow to protect the population from associated dangers, such as explosions and toxic gases. The island’s recovery has been a long and complex process, with extensive damage estimated at around €843 million.
The Cumbre Vieja volcano remains a powerful and unpredictable natural force. Lessons learned from the 2021 eruption are crucial to improving prevention and response measures for future volcanic eruptions, ensuring the safety of local communities and the protection of the environment.

A slamming arch in an alley in Burano

Un arco di sbatacchio in un vicolo di Burano

A sbatacchio arch in an alley in Burano.
Burano, the Venetian island famous for its colorful houses and lace tradition, is a place that enchants visitors with its unique and picturesque atmosphere. Walking through its narrow streets, you can breathe the authenticity and history of this fascinating island.
The alleys of Burano are a labyrinth of colors and architectural details that tell the daily life of the inhabitants. The houses, painted in bright colors, create a spectacular contrast with the canals and moored boats. Every corner of the island offers a new perspective and a new story to discover.
In one of these alleys there was this beautiful arch (which in architecture is called sbatacchio arch) which has a decorative but also structural function; in fact, it helps to maintain the stability of the buildings when the space between two buildings is short.
One of the most famous aspects of Burano is the lace tradition. The lace makers of the island have passed down this art from generation to generation, creating works of extraordinary beauty and precision. Visiting one of the lace workshops is an unmissable experience for anyone who wants to learn about this ancient tradition up close.
Visiting Burano means immersing yourself in a world of colors, traditions and history. Every alley, every house and every architectural detail contribute to creating a unique atmosphere that fascinates and enchants. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this wonderful Venetian island and let yourself be surprised by its timeless beauty.

The Rua de Santa Maria in Funchal on the island of Madeira

La Rua de Santa Maria a Funchal nell'isola di Madeira

Rua de Santa Maria in Funchal on the island of Madeira.
Rua de Santa Maria dates back to the 15th century, when Funchal was still in its early stages of urban development. Originally, the street was one of the main arteries of the city, connecting the local market, Mercado dos Lavradores, to the church of Santa Maria Maior (Socorro) and the Fort of São Tiago. Over the centuries, the street has undergone many transformations, but has always retained its traditional charm.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Rua de Santa Maria is the “Art of Open Doors” project that began in 2010. This project involved local and international artists in decorating the doors and facades of the buildings along the street. Each door became a canvas, turning into a unique and colorful work of art. This has not only beautified the street, but has also helped revitalize the area, attracting tourists and residents who are curious to admire the artistic creations.
Today, Rua de Santa Maria is a vibrant hub of social and cultural activity. There are numerous restaurants, bars, cafés and art galleries along the street. In the evening, the street comes alive with people enjoying an al fresco dinner or a drink in one of the many welcoming establishments. Among the most popular restaurants are Restaurante Gavião Novo and Tasquinha do Monsieur, where you can taste typical Madeiran cuisine.
Walking along Rua de Santa Maria is an experience not to be missed when visiting Funchal. The combination of history, art and social life makes this street a unique and fascinating place. Whether you are an art lover, a history buff or simply looking for a picturesque place to spend some time, Rua de Santa Maria is sure to captivate you.

Where is the fort located:

The archipelago is made up of two major islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, three smaller uninhabited islands, known as the Desertas, and two smaller islands, also uninhabited, called the Savage Islands. The largest island is Madeira. The archipelago, together with Cape Verde, the Azores and the Canaries, forms Macaronesia; the Azores and Madeira are part of Portugal, the Canaries are part of Spain and Cape Verde, once Portuguese, is now an independent republic.

Dream beaches: the iconic Carlisle Bay in Barbados.
Last year, around this time, I was about to leave for the Caribbean by ship and arrive in these dream places.
One of my favorites is without a doubt the island of Barbados with this beautiful cove called Carlisle Bay with Bebbles Beach.
Yes, I admit, I used the HDR function of the Gopro which emphasizes the colors a lot but don't think that the reality is very different.
