Domenico Chiodo (Genoa, 30 October 1823 – La Spezia, 19 March 1870) was an Italian general and architect, an officer of the military engineers, who designed the naval arsenals of La Spezia and Taranto and supervised the expansion of the one in Venice.

The Civic Theatre of La Spezia

The Civic Theatre of La Spezia.
Some time ago I took a tour of La Spezia, a city that I must admit, I have visited and know little about.
Among the various streets of the center I happened upon the historic theater that is already more than one hundred and fifty years old!
The photo also came out really well, I think.

The Teatro Civico is the most important theatre in La Spezia and is located in the historic centre of the city, in Piazza Mentana. In terms of size, it is the third largest theatre in Liguria.

Stella Maris (Stella del mare) è un titolo, fra i più antichi, per la Vergine Maria, madre di Gesù. Il titolo è utilizzato per enfatizzare il ruolo di Maria come segno di speranza e come stella polare per i cristiani; con questo titolo, la Vergine Maria è invocata come guida e protettrice di chi viaggia o cerca il proprio sostentamento sul mare, titolo simile a quello di Odigitria.

Tellaro is the easternmost hamlet of the municipality of Lerici, in the province of La Spezia. It has been reviewed as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
The town is a small seaside village, perched on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of La Spezia. A destination for many Italian and foreign artists, Mario Soldati found a home here during the long years of his old age.

The hospital of La Spezia is now housed in this sumptuous palace although (as you can read below) its location has been very troubled and dates back to 1480.

In 1480 the Confraternity of the Santissima Annunziata, which had its headquarters in an oratory located immediately east of the church of Santa Maria, took the initiative to create the first city hospital. The structure was located in the oratory of Sant’Andrea, located right near the Biassa gate, upstream.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in La Spezia

The facade of the abbey church of Santa Maria Assunta in La Spezia.
After the cathedral of Cristo Re, which took its place as pro-cathedral, this is certainly the most important church in the city of La Spezia.
The facade, even if I read that it has been rebuilt at least a couple of times, is very simple but at the same time decidedly very pretty.

The triptych of marble lunettes, placed on the facade, above the portals, are the work of the sculptor Angiolo Del Santo. The Porta della Misericordia is the central bronze portal of the church. After a long gestation it was inaugurated in 1999, it is the work of the sculptor from La Spezia Guglielmo Carro and is composed of eight bas-relief panels depicting the seven works of mercy and Pope John Paul II in prayer.

Il caruggio di La Spezia che si chiama via del Prione

Il caruggio di La Spezia che si chiama via del Prione.
Devo dire che non sono stato moltissime volte a La Spezia e così, cogliendo al balzo il fatto che dovevo proprio svolgere una commissione, sono andato nella cittadina del Levante Ligure e, ovviamente, armato della mia macchina fotografica ho fatto foto in lungo e largo.
Questo, per esempio, è il bel caruggio; sarà lungo un paio di chilometri ed è la via dello “struscio” cittadino.
Molti negozi, bar e qualche ristorante in una cornice delle case colorate tipiche liguri.

The territory of La Spezia was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as evidenced by the numerous stele statues and the finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages found on various occasions on the heights of the Gulf and the adjacent valleys. Later, in historical times, the territory saw the settlement of the Ligurian populations, subdued in 155 BC by the consul Marco Claudio Marcello.

One of the many glimpses that the narrow and steep streets (in Genoese creuze) create in the beautiful seaside village of Tellaro, near Lerici.

Uno dei molti scorci che i borghi liguri riescono a donare ai visitatori e turisti.
Grazie ai colori pastello delle case e ai molti archi, tipici dell’urbanistica ligure.

It was with the Republic of Genoa that Lerici began to assume a more important role.
After having purchased Porto Venere and made it a strategic base for the control of the gulf of La Spezia, Genoa also came into possession of Lerici, negotiating with the Lords of Vezzano and Arcola, who were the feudal lords of the locality.

Gli abitanti erano atterriti nel vedere il drago avvicinarsi, ma Giorgio li tranquillizzò, dicendo loro di non aver timore poiché «Iddio mi ha mandato a voi per liberarvi dal drago: se abbraccerete la fede in Cristo, riceverete il battesimo e io ucciderò il mostro». Allora il re e la popolazione si convertirono e il cavaliere uccise il drago e lo fece portare fuori dalla città, trascinato da quattro paia di buoi.
