Latin writing on the door of a villa in Rapallo
Above the entrance to Villa Robilant, in Rapallo, there is this Latin phrase by Horace which says:

Non incedo per ignes suppositos cineri doloso (which means: You walk on burning coals hidden by deceptive ashes).

I don't quite understand the meaning but I think it's: be careful because under the deceptive ash, burning embers are hidden.

La scritta Hic manebimus optime sulla salita della Penisola.
Diverse volte ho percorso la salita che porta sulla cima della Penisola di Sestri Levante fino alla chiesa di San Nicolò. Solo di recente però, ho notato questa iscrizione in latino Hic manebimus optime che sta sopra ad un ingresso sul retro dell’Hotel Due Mari e che appunto significa “qui staremo benissimo”.

Hic manebimus optime (“Qui staremo benissimo”) è una frase diventata celebre come espressione di risolutezza. È riportata da Tito Livio nella sua Storia romana (Ab Urbe condita libri, V, 55), dov’è attribuita a un centurione che, nel frangente storico del sacco di Roma (circa 390/386 a.C.), avvenuto durante le invasioni celtiche della penisola italiana, l’avrebbe pronunciata come esortazione per i propri compagni, influendo, in modo indiretto, sulla successiva decisione del senato romano di non abbandonare la città.

Il motto di Genova in via XX Settembre

Il motto di Genova in via XX Settembre.
Passeggiando in via XX Settembre a Genova mi sono imbattuto in questa scritta in latino, situata sopra una delle tante volte in marmo.
Griphus ut has angit, sic hostes Ianua frangit. Traduzione: Come il grifone artiglia queste, così Genova distrugge i nemici.
Cercando su internet il significato della scritta ho scoperto che e’ uno dei motti piu’ antichi della Superba.
C’e’ anche una effigie del grifone che artiglia una aquila ed una volpe.

La frase: non ita semper erit

Non ita semper erit.
Questa è frase in latino che significa “non sarà sempre così” che campeggia sul portone di un palazzo della Baia del Silenzio di Sestri Levante.
Ho deciso di postarvelo oggi, che è la fine di questo 2018, perché vi sia da monito e di augurio per il futuro.

Godetevi la vita oggi perché tutto è fuggente e il futuro è sempre incerto.
