Varese Ligure Castle: a journey through time. Located in the heart of the Val di Vara, Varese Ligure Castle is an architectural jewel that tells centuries of history and traditions. Built in the 15th century by the Fieschi counts, the castle dominates the main square of the village, offering visitors a breathtaking spectacle and a dive into the past. The castle was built as part of an ambitious urban project known as “Borgo Rotondo”, characterized by its elliptical shape and the stone houses that surround the central square. This unique structure not only served defensive purposes, but also facilitated the commercial and social activities of the village. Walking through the castle, you can admire the two main towers: the Torre del Piccinino, built in 1435, and the cylindrical tower built between 1472 and 1479. These towers, with their imposing walls and architectural details, testify to the strategic importance of the castle in controlling the communication routes between the Ligurian coast and the Emilian hinterland. Today, the Castle of Varese Ligure is well preserved and can be visited on special occasions. Its fascinating history and architectural beauty make it an unmissable destination for anyone wishing to explore the wonders of Liguria. The Castle of Varese Ligure is not only a historical monument, but also a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of the region. A visit to this castle offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in history and appreciate the architectural mastery of centuries past.

Where is the castle located:
The Fieschi Castle was a military and defensive building in Varese Ligure, in the province of La Spezia, located in Piazza Castello. Built by the Fieschi counts in the Middle Ages, the castle completed the new urban work started by the Fieschi feudal lords in the center of Varese and which was called “Borgo Rotondo”, for its elliptical shape, a sort of “fortified citadel”. A glimpse of Via Dante Alighieri in Lavagna. Hidden among the winding streets of the Ligurian coast, Lavagna is a gem rich in history and charm. At the heart of this charming town lies its historic center, a maze of cobbled alleys and historic buildings that tell centuries-old stories. One of the most evocative spots is Via Dante Alighieri, a street that runs through the center and offers a unique glimpse into the daily life and architectural beauty of Lavagna. Walking along Via Dante Alighieri, you can admire the porticoes with black slate floors, which give the street an elegant and timeless atmosphere. This street, which passes in front of the Basilica of Santo Stefano, is animated by several taverns and inns that invite visitors to stop and enjoy the local cuisine. The facades of the buildings along Via Dante Alighieri are a mix of architectural styles, with details that date back to different historical periods. The tall houses of the small port of Camogli. Camogli is not the classic Ligurian village with small and low houses overlooking the sea. In this town in fact the houses are quite tall and large but they climb up the ridge that goes down to the sea and this is the most impressive feature. This shot, taken from the top of the Aurelia, shows the houses built around Castel Dragone and for this reason they have a circular structure.

A wonderful window on the sea in Portovenere. Portovenere, a charming village located on the Ligurian coast, is known for its natural beauty and historical heritage. Among the many architectural treasures that adorn this picturesque village, one of the most famous is undoubtedly the quadrifora of the Church of San Pietro. The quadrifora, a window with four lights, is located just near the Church of San Pietro and looks towards the west. This architectural element is characterized by four small arches supported by three small columns, creating a visual effect of great elegance and lightness. The church itself, built in the 13th century by the Genoese, has a Gothic style with black and white bands that add a further touch of refinement. The position of the quadrifora offers a spectacular view of the sea to the west with the gaze that meets the Cinque Terre. This panoramic point is one of the most photographed in Portovenere, attracting visitors from all over the world who wish to capture the timeless beauty of this place. The combination of Gothic architecture and the seascape creates a unique and evocative atmosphere. The quadrifora of Portovenere is not only an architectural element of great aesthetic value, but also represents an important piece of history and culture. Its conservation is essential to keep alive the memory of the past and to continue to inspire future generations.

The Lanterna di Genova is a monument that embodies the history, culture and maritime tradition of one of the most important port cities in the Mediterranean. Every stone, every step of this structure tells a story of sailors, trade, wars and rebirths. It is a lighthouse not only for ships sailing the sea, but also for generations of Genoese who see in it a symbol of their identity and their thousand-year history.

The Lanterna of Genoa (or simply “Lanterna”, in Genoese a Lanterna de Zena or a Lanterna) is the port lighthouse of the capital of Liguria, the city once defined as the Superb or Dominant of the seas.
