Walking among the little bridges and canals of Venice.
It's been several years now since I was in the Serenissima and took this photo.
But I think that the images of the canals and the little bridges that cross them are always beautiful.

Passing by ship near Cristo Rei

Passing by ship near the Cristo Rei in Lisbon.
When you leave Lisbon by ship and travel along the immense mouth of the Tagus River, you have to pass under the famous bridge called Ponte 25 de Abril which is located a short distance from perhaps the most famous monument in Lisbon: the Cristo Rei.
Here, on board the ex Costa Firenze a few years ago, I took some photos just as the ship passed under the bridge.

Here is where the bridge and the Christ are located:

The National Sanctuary of Christ the King or simply Christ the King is a Portuguese sanctuary located in Pragal, a former friary of the city of Almada, which in turn is part of Greater Lisbon. It is famous because behind it is a colossal statue of Christ the King, inspired by the Christ of Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, designed by the architect António Lino, built by Francisco Franco de Sousa and inaugurated on May 17, 1959. The base of the statue is shaped like a door and is 75 meters high and above it is the 28-meter statue of Christ the King.

The view on a canal in Padua

Lo sguardo su un canale di Padova

A view of a canal in Padua.
Padua, a city rich in history and culture, is crossed by a network of canals that add a special charm to its urban landscape. These waterways not only represent an essential part of the history and development of the city, but also offer suggestive views that enchant residents and visitors.
The canals of Padua have ancient origins and have been used for different purposes over the centuries. In Roman times, the canals were mainly used for the irrigation of fields and for the transport of goods. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the network of canals was expanded and improved to support the city's growing trade. The canals became essential transport routes for goods such as grain, timber and salt.
One of the most important canals in Padua is the Piovego, which connects the city to the Brenta, facilitating river transport to the Venice Lagoon. This connection was crucial for the trade and economic development of the city.
Walking along the canals of Padua is a unique experience that offers the opportunity to discover hidden corners and picturesque views. The canals are lined with historic buildings, ancient bridges and lush vegetation, creating a romantic and relaxing atmosphere. The calm waters reflect the colors and shapes of the surrounding buildings, adding an extra layer of beauty to the urban landscape.
One of the most suggestive points is the Canale delle Navi, which crosses the historic center of the city. This canal, with its calm waters and stone bridges, offers a fascinating glimpse of medieval Padua. Along the canal you can admire historic buildings, churches and other buildings of great artistic and architectural value.
The canals of Padua are not only landscape elements, but are also an integral part of the daily life of the city. Commercial activities, cultural events and moments of leisure take place along their banks. Open-air markets, fairs and events are frequently held along the canals, offering visitors the opportunity to discover local products and artisanal crafts.
Numerous cafés and restaurants with terraces overlooking the canals invite you to relax and enjoy the view. Sipping a coffee or enjoying a typical meal while watching the boats go by is an unforgettable experience. During summer evenings, the canals come alive with lights and music, creating a festive and lively atmosphere.
The preservation of Padua's canals is essential to preserving the city's history and heritage. In recent years, numerous restoration and enhancement projects have been undertaken to keep the canals clean and in good condition. These efforts not only help protect the environment, but also promote tourism and improve the quality of life of residents.
The city government, in collaboration with local associations and citizens, works constantly to ensure that Padua's canals remain a living and breathing element of the city. Projects to redevelop the banks, improve infrastructure and promote cultural activities along the canals are just some of the initiatives implemented to enhance this precious heritage.

The city was one of the cultural capitals of the fourteenth century, thanks to the presence of the lordship of the Carraresi or Da Carrara, who made Padua one of the main centers of pre-humanism. Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, an impressive cultural movement devoted to the ancient developed in conjunction with Florence, which would transform into the Paduan Renaissance and influence the artistic landscape of the entire northern Italy of the fifteenth century. In Padua there are two sites declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: the botanical garden, the oldest in the world, and the cycles of frescoes from the fourteenth century, preserved in eight building complexes including the Scrovegni Chapel.

When I want to go downtown on foot (or by car) from my house, there are three options: either you go through Mandela Park, or via Antica Romana Occidentale, or you go through via Nazionale.
Going through via Nazionale, when you are about to arrive in the center, you come across the railway underpass and, immediately after, a series of beautiful colored houses that I tried to emphasize in these photos.
This underpass has been there for as long as I can remember, but before, if I'm not mistaken, there was a level crossing with a small pedestrian underpass (always flooded when it rained).

Do you have any memories about it?

It is the first municipality you come across when travelling from Genoa towards the Riviera di Levante, in a small inlet at the mouth of the river of the same name. Among the reliefs of the territory there is Mount Cordona (803 m) along the ancient path to the hamlet of Sessarego and Mount Rotondo (789 m). The beaches alternate with deep and characteristic cliffs. It is possible to practice surfing there. The hinterland is typical of eastern Liguria, partly with strips of olive groves, with the possibility of excursions.

The wooden bridge of Flam in Norway

Il ponte in legno di Flam in Norvegia

The Flam Wooden Bridge in Norway.
Nestled in the majestic mountains of Norway, the picturesque village of Flam is famous not only for its breathtaking scenery but also for its charming wooden bridge. This bridge, which spans the Flam River, has become a local icon, a symbol of the connection between man and nature.
The Flam Wooden Bridge, with its elegant and rustic architecture, blends in perfectly with its surroundings. Its solid wooden beams rise towards the sky, while the interwoven railings create an artistic effect that captures the attention of anyone who passes over it. The choice of wood as the main material is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also a tribute to the Norwegian building tradition, which has made wise use of natural resources for centuries.
In addition to its visual beauty, the Flam Bridge plays a fundamental role in the life of the local community. By connecting the two banks of the river, it facilitates the daily transit of residents and visitors, creating a tangible connection between people and the surrounding nature. The feeling of walking on this bridge is a unique experience, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Norway.
During the warmer seasons, the bridge becomes a meeting point for locals and tourists, offering a scenic space to admire the surrounding landscape. During the winter, however, the bridge takes on a different charm, with snow gently settling on the wooden beams, creating an enchanting picture.
The construction of the Flam wooden bridge is also an example of ecological engineering, with the aim of minimising the impact on the surrounding environment. The architects have cleverly integrated the bridge into the natural topography, avoiding disturbances and preserving the beauty of the place.

In conclusion, the Flam wooden bridge is much more than a simple crossing structure. It is a symbol of connection, union and respect for the environment. Crossing this bridge, you can experience a moment of quiet and contemplation, surrounded by the pristine beauty of Norway and the warmth of a community that values its history and its natural environment.

Flåm is a Norwegian village of about 500 inhabitants, at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord. The village is located in the municipality of Aurland, in the county of Vestland, Norway. It is touched by the European route E16. The valley of Flåm was formed by the thick layer of ice that remained in this area for millions of years: the erosion of the glacier made the land sink, creating the deep and wide valleys that attract a large number of tourists every year.
