An alley with a slate floor in the village of Lavagna. Even in the beautiful town of Lavagna there are several porticos that surround the historic center. In particular this one, in via Dante Alighieri, I particularly like because even the slate floor (the stone that was exported everywhere from the hinterland of Lavagna) is exceptionally shiny!

The ancient building of the Grani market in Brescia. One of the most beautiful squares in Brescia is the large and bright Piazza Arnaldo, a place of Brescia's nightlife where there are several bars. One of the sides of the square is formed by the portico of the Grani Market, a recently renovated structure endorsed by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of Brescia.

On the southern side of Piazzale Arnaldo, in Brescia, stands the majestic neoclassical building called Mercato dei Grani, built at the expense of the city starting in 1820 and completed in 1823. The initial project was by the architect Angelo Vita, with the collaboration of a Milanese colleague, Giuseppe Antolini, and a painter from Brescia, Luigi Basiletti. From under the porticoes of the little square of Portofino. When you have the chance to visit Portofino in winter you realize how its beauty is that of the classic Ligurian seaside villages, a little reserved and solitary. It's a whole different story when it is assailed by tourists.

Since the great influx of foreign guests – first British and then German – in the early twentieth century, Portofino’s economy has been closely linked to tourism. The local “Piazzetta” overlooked by public refreshment areas, shops, boutiques and other commercial activities was recognized in July 2012 as a Historic Place of Italy, the first and only certificate issued by the association of the same name, for its historical and cultural value. The portico of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. I have passed many times under the portico that adorns the entrance of the most famous and largest opera house in Genoa, which dominates Piazza De Ferrari. I must admit, however, that I have never entered to see any show (how sad I am), but sooner or later I promise that I will post a photo of the interior as well.

A colorful alley in the city of Padua. Walking through the city of Padua I walked along this beautiful alley with its arcades and it reminded me a lot of the Ligurian alleys that are so familiar to me. To tell the truth, Padua has a lot of arcades and I discovered that it is the second largest European city for these.

The porticos in the centre of Padua extend for approximately 25 km,[29] placing Padua in second place behind Bologna, which has a network of porticos as extensive and branched as any other in Europe.[30] The construction of porticos in the city is an ancient tradition, and some can be found in Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Neoclassical and modern styles. The Loggia dei Lanzi in Piazza della Signoria in Florence. Although its real name is Loggia della Signoria, like the square of the same name, I knew it as the Loggia dei Lanzi. This structure, created before the Renaissance (and with a Gothic appearance), was built to house the many public assemblies of the Florentine Republic indoors. Inside there are various works of great value, among which the Perseus by Benedetto Cellini stands out.

Some houses overlooking the little square of Portofino in Liguria. Probably the most photographed houses in Liguria are those overlooking the famous little port of the village of Portofino. This is a slightly alternative shot of the famous little square.

Courtyard of Honour of the Brera Palace in Milan. One of the most famous Italian cultural venues in the world. This is the entrance cloister to the palace which houses the Brera Art Gallery, the Braidense National Library and the Academy of Fine Arts. In the centre of the courtyard is the bronze statue of Napoleon Bonaparte as Mars the Peacemaker (a copy of the marble statue by Antonio Canova, now in Apsley House in London).

Here's where the courtyard is located:
The courtyard, like the entire building, dates back to the first half of the 17th century and was originally built as a cloister for the monastery of Santa Maria di Brera, governed by the Jesuit order, until the religious institute was suppressed and made property of the state, which transformed the building into the headquarters of the new academy of fine arts and art gallery. The Ducal Court of the Sforza Castle in Milan. Even though it is a couple of hours by train from where I live, I have not been to Milan as a tourist that many times. The last one, however, I walked around (and photographed) a lot. In this image there is the Ducal Court of the castle with the famous colonnade called the Portico dell’Elefante.

The court has a U-shape and occupies the northern area of the castle. It was built and decorated in the second half of the fifteenth century mainly by Galeazzo Maria Sforza, who came to reside here from his marriage to Bona in 1468 until his death, and by Ludovico il Moro who resided here during the entire twenty years of his dukedom. A portico in Varese Ligure photographed in black and white. I think it's been years since I took this photo in the village of Varese Ligure and I've never had the chance to publish it. It represents one of the many porticos of the famous round square in the center of the village (also called Borgo Rotondo).

Borgo Rotondo in the historic center of Varese. Commissioned by the Fieschi family for the control and defense of the Varese territory, it is made up of identical stone houses arranged along the perimeter which, with an elliptical shape, enclose the two main squares (Piazza Fieschi and Piazza Castello), where the commercial activities, warehouses and laboratories were located in the underlying porticoes.
