Àgave L. is a genus of monocotyledonous succulent plants. Due to its shape and the variety of species, it is a highly appreciated plant in public and private gardens throughout the world; in its places of origin (Central America) it has played a profound role in the life of local populations. Its name was given in 1753 by Linnaeus (from the Greek ἀγαυός, “illustrious”, “noble”).
