The bell tower of San Lorenzo seen from Castelletto

Il campanile di San Lorenzo visto dalla spianata di Castelletto

The bell tower of San Lorenzo seen from the Castelletto esplanade.
The city of Genoa, with its historical and architectural charm, offers numerous panoramic points from which to admire its beauties. One of the most evocative is undoubtedly the Castelletto esplanade, a panoramic terrace that offers a breathtaking view of the city and the sea. Among the many buildings that stand out on the horizon, the majestic bell tower of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo stands out.

From the Esplanade of Castelletto, the bell tower of San Lorenzo rises with its characteristic Gothic structure, characterized by black and white horizontal bands⁴. This bell tower, an integral part of the cathedral, is one of the most significant examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. Its grandeur and elegance immediately capture the attention of anyone who happens to admire the view from the esplanade.
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the main Catholic place of worship in Genoa and its construction dates back to the 9th century. However, the Gothic bell tower was added only later, in the 13th century, and represents a perfect example of how medieval architecture has evolved over the centuries. The black and white bands that decorate the bell tower are typical of the Genoese style and give the building a unique and recognizable appearance.

The Spianata di Castelletto is not only a panoramic point, but also a place of peace and tranquility where Genoese and tourists can relax and enjoy the view. The terrace is easily accessible and offers a 360-degree view of the city, allowing you to admire not only the bell tower of San Lorenzo, but also other historic buildings such as the Palazzo Ducale and the Torre Grimaldina⁴.
Visiting the Spianata di Castelletto and admiring the bell tower of San Lorenzo is an experience that allows you to fully appreciate the beauty and history of Genoa. This panoramic point offers a unique perspective on the city and its architectural treasures, making every visit an unforgettable moment.

Here's where I took the photo from:

Saint Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of Rome, where he was martyred in 258 during the persecution ordered by the Roman Emperor Valerian in 257. The Catholic Church venerates him as a saint. Since the 4th century, Lawrence has been one of the most venerated martyrs in the Church of Rome. Constantine I was the first to build a small oratory on the site of his martyrdom. This building was enlarged and embellished by Pelagius II (579-590).

The magnificent Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Genoa

La magnifica Cattedrale di San Lorenzo a Genova

The magnificent Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Genoa.
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, located in the heart of Genoa, is one of the most important and fascinating architectural testimonies of the city. This Gothic masterpiece, with Romanesque and Renaissance influences, is not only a religious symbol, but is also an important tourist attraction and a historical reference point for the Genoese.
The construction of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo began in the 9th century, on the remains of an earlier paleo-Christian basilica. However, much of the current building dates back to the 12th century, when the city of Genoa was at the height of its maritime and commercial power. Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent numerous modifications and extensions, which reflect the various architectural styles that followed one another.
The main portal, with its elaborate sculptural decorations, is a splendid example of Gothic art. The black and white stripes of the facade, made of marble, recall the Pisan influence and harmonize perfectly with the other Gothic and Romanesque elements of the building.
The facade of the cathedral is characterized by three richly decorated portals and a large central rose window. The two bell towers, one of which is incomplete, add an element of asymmetry that contributes to the unique charm of the building.
Inside, the cathedral is equally impressive. The naves are separated by marble and granite columns, and the ceilings are adorned with frescoes and decorations that tell biblical stories and local legends. Among the most significant works of art inside the cathedral, the Genoese “Holy Grail” stands out, a precious glass tray that, according to legend, was used during the Last Supper.

Another element of great interest is the Museo del Tesoro, located in the cathedral's basement. Numerous objects of inestimable value are preserved here, including relics, sacred vestments and jewels. Among the most famous treasures is the Sacro Catino, a green glass bowl that was believed to be the Holy Grail.
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is at the center of numerous religious and civil celebrations. The most important is the feast of San Giovanni Battista, the patron saint of Genoa, which is celebrated on June 24. During this day, the cathedral becomes the center of processions, religious events and celebrations that involve the entire city.
The cathedral also has a history of resilience. During the Second World War, a bomb fell on the cathedral, but miraculously did not explode, thus saving the building from serious damage. This event is still remembered by the Genoese as a sign of divine protection.

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is not only a place of worship, but a monument that tells the story of Genoa, its traditions and its art. Every corner of the cathedral, from the decorations of the facade to the internal naves, speaks of centuries of faith, culture and beauty. Visiting the Cathedral of San Lorenzo means taking a journey through time, immersing yourself in one of the most fascinating pages of Genoese history.

The most important church in Liguria is also the most majestic. This is the main altar.
Built in a style that could be called Ligurian, with alternating green and white marble, it is also very beautiful inside.
This is the main nave of the church and you can also see at the top the shield with the cross of St. George, protector of Genoa.

San Lorenzo, the Cathedral of Genoa.
San Lorenzo welcomes you in its majesty and with its typical Genoese colors.
A must-see for all tourists who come to visit the Superba also because it is exactly halfway between the Porto Antico (and the Aquarium) and Piazza De Ferrari.
I already have another post with several photos of the Cathedral (here) but they are a bit old (and not of excellent quality) while this one was taken with a wide angle.

Where is the Cathedral located:

According to archaeological findings, a stable Christian community was certainly present in the city of Genoa already in the middle of the third century and actually used the area of San Lorenzo as a burial place. The cemetery was, based on the material found, very probably already used in Roman times.

A typical example of "Ligurian" architecture with great use of the two-tone effect of the marble and slate.
Not to be missed if you visit "Zena"!
