Hexadactyly in a painting in Santa Maria in Castello in Genoa. Do you know what hexadactyly is? To tell the truth, you can understand that it has something to do with six (hex) and fingers (dactyly) but I didn't know, before doing some research, that there was some mystery about it hidden in pictorial art. The photo in this post is a detail of a painting, the Annunciation by Giovanni Mazone preserved in Santa Maria in Castello, in which one of the characters (in the left part of the left part of the polyptych depicting Saint John the Baptist and the apostle James the Greater) one of the Saints has feet with six toes. I discovered that in art it is customary to add a finger to saintly and excellent characters (and I remember that at the time, during the visit to the church, the guide had explained it) but digging I discovered that it is not always like this and there is a sort of mystery in these depictions (here is a starting point for further study).

The polyptych of the Annunciation was executed in 1470 for the chapel of the same name in the church of Santa Maria di Castello in Genoa. The elaborate gilded wooden frame was executed by Mazone himself with the clear intent of reviving the elements of Gothic architecture. The compositions of the predella represent four episodes of the life of Mary: the Marriage of the Madonna and her meeting with Elizabeth; the birth of Jesus; the adoration of the Magi; the flight into Egypt and the purification of the B. V. Annunziata. Continue and learn more on Wikipedia

The polyptych of the Annunciation in Santa Maria in Castello in Genoa. A splendid work of art in an equally splendid church in Genoa. In particular, the gold frame of this work by Giovanni Mazone stands out with its particular and very elaborate Gothic workmanship.

It opens onto the second cloister and can be reached from the atrium; on the first floor is the Annunciation, a mural painting by Giusto d'Alemagna from 1451; on the vault, cross vaults with flaming leaves and tondos with Sibyls and Prophets, also dating back to the fifteenth century. The Moorish Christ in Santa Maria in Castello in Genoa. This beautiful wooden crucifix, called Moorish for the dark color of the wood used, is one of the works in the beautiful church that impressed me the most. Its history is very particular: during a restoration in the middle of the last century it was discovered that many elements of the statue (such as the beard and long hair) were fake and were not part of the original work; it was decided to remove them to bring the Christ back to the original. But since the faithful were so used to seeing the statue with those elements it was decided to make a copy (still present in the church). Another beautiful story, of which I leave the links below, is the one that tells of betrayed loves that the statue remedied.

The legend that speaks of the young girl betrayed by love and helped by this crucifix can be read on two of my favorite websites about Genoa: amezena.net and dearmissfletcher.com.

The third cloister of the church of Santa Maria in Castello in Genoa. A “stolen” shot of the second cloister of the complex of the church of Santa Maria in Castello. I write stolen because the cloister can only be seen through an iron gate since it is part of spaces managed by the University and therefore cannot be visited through the church. For me it was an incredible surprise: in addition to the splendid church, the three splendid cloisters.

The loggia of the second cloister of Santa Maria in Castello in Genoa. A jewel in the alleys of Genoa that I discovered by chance a few months ago. This splendid church and even more beautiful the three annexed cloisters were truly a surprise. In addition, the visit to the complex, accompanied by a volunteer and completely free guide, was very interesting and made us delve into many aspects. In these two shots I propose a part of the second cloister, all frescoed; in particular, in my opinion beautiful, the painting of the Annunciation.
