The facade of the Nicolosio Lomellini palace in Genoa

La facciata del palazzo Nicolosio Lomellini a Genova

The facade of the Nicolosio Lomellini palace in Genoa.
One of the most beautiful and famous streets in Genoa is certainly via Garibaldi, home to many of the Rolli palaces.
One of the palaces is the one I photographed in this article: Palazzo Podestà (or Nicolosio Lomellini) from the name of the last owner, Andrea Podestà.

Where is the palace:

The façade, where the strong presence of Bergamasco is perceived, is enlivened by a rich stucco decoration, with winged female herms, to support the string course of the ground floor; ribbons and drapes to hold up, on the first floor, trophies of arms; garlands and masks crowning the windows, with classical figures within oval medallions, on the second. Even in the festive stucco apparatus of the oval-plan atrium, the intervention of Bergamasco is evident, who was able to introduce the suggestions of the most up-to-date Mannerist culture to Genoa.

A sundial in the alley of Rapallo

Una meridiana nel caruggio di Rapallo

A sundial in the alley of Rapallo.
I love walking around our towns looking for particular corners or elements to photograph and share with the visitors of the site.
Some time ago, walking in via Mazzini, I noticed this beautiful restored sundial.
With the Latin phrase: “Sol omnibus lucet” (translation: the sun shines for everyone)!

Garibaldi street in Genoa: a journey into the heart of history

Via Garibaldi a Genova: un viaggio nel cuore della storia

Garibaldi street in Genoa: a journey into the heart of history.
Via Garibaldi, located in the heart of the historic center of Genoa, is one of the most fascinating and history-rich streets in the city. Also known as Strada Nuova, it was built between 1558 and 1583 at the behest of the Genoese aristocracy during the Renaissance. Originally called Strada Maggiore, it was renamed in honor of Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1882.

This street, 250 meters long and 7.5 meters wide, is famous for its magnificent palaces, many of which were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2006. The Palazzi dei Rolli, as they are known, were residences of noble families who hosted dignitaries and illustrious visitors.
Among the most famous palaces we find:
Palazzo Rosso: decorated with frescoes by great Ligurian painters of the 17th century, it houses precious furnishings and art collections.
Palazzo Bianco: here you can admire works by Caravaggio and other Italian and European artists.
Palazzo Doria Tursi: seat of the Municipality of Genoa, it houses the famous violin of Paganini and other works of art of great value.
Walking along Via Garibaldi, you can breathe the ancient beauty of Genoa through its decorated facades, the grand atriums, the gardens with fountains and nymphaeums. This street is not only an important historical testimony, but it is also a place where time seems to have stopped, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the cultural richness of the city.
Via Garibaldi is much more than just a street; it is a journey into the past, a unique experience that allows you to discover the magnificence and history of Genoa. Whether you are passionate about architecture, history or art, a visit to this iconic street is a must for anyone in Genoa.

Vico Boccanegra in the historic center of Genoa.
Walking through Zena, precisely along via Garibaldi (formerly Strada Nuova), you can see many small alleys that lead to the historic heart of the city. This is one of them: vico Boccanegra.
In fact, walking along this alley you go down to the Maddalena neighborhood.

Vico del Duca in the historic center of Genoa.
Walking along the splendid Via Garibaldi, perhaps the most beautiful street in Genoa, several alleys start off that lead down to the most hidden alleys of the historic center.
One of them is this one that starts right in front of Palazzo Doria Tursi.

Here's where this exact point is located:

In Via Garibaldi in front of the Palazzo del Comune of Genoa is the vico del Duca. The caruggio is called this way precisely because of the name of the palace of the Duke of Tursi, seat of the first citizen of Genoa. Tursi is a town in Basilicata that was granted as a fief in 1552 to Admiral Andrea Doria as a marquisate (later duchy) by Emperor Charles V.

The archivolt of via Garibaldi in Sestri Levante

L'archivolto di via Garibaldi a Sestri Levante

The archivolt of via Garibaldi in Sestri Levante.
One of the points of the historic center of Sestri Levante that I love to photograph is this beautiful archivolt that I know is located in the small street that connects vico Lombardo to piazza Matteotti.
As several visitors wrote to me in another post (qui) the alley was also called "caruggiu de l'ou" (alley of gold) since there were warehouses of manganese (coming from the Libiola mine) from which they were loaded onto ships for England.
