Buildings on Twenty September street in Genoa seen from the churchyard of Santo Stefano.
Whenever I can, when I find myself on Via XX, I go up to the church of Santo Stefano for a moment to photograph the street and the buildings from above.
Not everyone knows that going up Via XX, just after the Monumental Bridge, there is a small staircase (which does not promise anything good) that leads to the splendid church of Santo Stefano and to the churchyard which in reality is nothing more than a terrace on the main street.

Io credo che questo tratto dei portici di via Venti, la via principale del centro del capoluogo ligure, sia il più bello.

The square of the Abbey of Santo Stefano in Genoa.
This church is in the heart of industrious Genoa; right in the center above via XX Settembre.
I'm copying and pasting a post from a few months ago because the photo was taken in mid-November.
It is enough, at the height of the Ponte Monumentale, to climb a few steps and you arrive on this terrace with the splendid church on one side and the beautiful noble buildings of via Venti on the other.

The church of Santo Stefano (or abbey of Santo Stefano) is one of the most famous Christian places of worship in Genoa, and its parish community is part of the Vicariate of Carignano – Foce of the archdiocese of Genoa. Situated on a hill overlooking the central Via XX Settembre, it was one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in the Ligurian capital. Christopher Columbus was baptized in this church and it is believed that the young Balilla was also baptized.

La via più famosa di Genova, vista dal ponte verso piazza de Ferrari con l’Abbazia di Santo Stefano sulla destra.
Foto scattata alcuni mesi fa in uno dei pochi giorni soleggiati in un novembre molto piovoso.

Via XX Settembre è una strada che ha avuto un’origine controversa. Fu fortemente voluta dal sindaco Andrea Podestà, ma osteggiata da parte della popolazione residente poiché per costruirla fu necessario procedere a pesanti demolizioni di case e negozi. Soprattutto furono contrari i religiosi della chiesa del Rimedio, espropriati per far passare l’arteria.

La Abbazia di Santo Stefano a Genova.
Questa chiesa è nel cuore della Genova laboriosa; in pieno centro sopra a via XX Settembre.
E’ sufficiente, all’altezza del Ponte Monumentale, salire qualche gradino e si arriva su questa terrazza con da un lato la splendida chiesa e dall’altro i bei palazzi nobiliari di via Venti.

I portici di via XX

I portici di via XX.
Genova, oltre ai famosi vicoli, ha una delle vie piu’ belle per fare una passeggiata. Si trova proprio in centro e si chiama via Venti Settembre.
I portici sono, in alcuni punti, veramente suggestivi. In questo punto, ad esempio, da un lato c’e’ il contrasto tra i marmi bianchi e verdi (tipici della Liguria) e dall’altro uno splendido palazzo “nobiliare”.
Tutto proprio in centro, a pochi metri da piazza De Ferrari.

Il motto di Genova in via XX Settembre

Motto di Genova

Il motto di Genova in via XX Settembre.
Passeggiando in via XX Settembre a Genova mi sono imbattuto in questa scritta in latino, situata sopra una delle tante volte in marmo.
Griphus ut has angit, sic hostes Ianua frangit. Traduzione: Come il grifone artiglia queste, così Genova distrugge i nemici.
Cercando su internet il significato della scritta ho scoperto che e’ uno dei motti piu’ antichi della Superba.
C’e’ anche una effigie del grifone che artiglia una aquila ed una volpe.
