The part closest to the sea of the Sestrese caruggio hosts a myriad of commercial activities aimed at satisfying tourists: restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors, all of which work very hard when visitors fill our town.

Where via Palestro meets the Caruggio in Sestri Levante.
Last winter I managed to take some photos in a rather deserted Sestri and I took the opportunity to take many shots in the historic center.
This is the point where via Palestro, the small street that leads to the Bay of Silence, meets via XXV Aprile, the Sestrese caruggio.

Questa è la via più frequentata della mia cittadina: il caruggio (il vero nome è via XXV Aprile).
Tanti negozi, qualche bar, un paio di panifici e qualche ristorante.
In cuore pulsante, specialmente d’estate (e questa foto è stata scattata a luglio dello scorso anno), di Sestri.

The final part of via XXV Aprile, the caruggio for everyone, the one towards the church of Santa Maria di Nazareth.
Colorful houses, outdoor seating of restaurants and taverns.
There were few people also because it was a gloomy morning in early February (2024).

Discovering the caruggio of Sestri Levante, a marvel of Liguria.
Perhaps the title came out a little too high-sounding but I truly believe that the caruggio of my town is one of the most beautiful in Liguria.
If you then add that it is used to reach the Baia del Silenzio then you cannot help but agree with me!

One of the classic photos of Sestri, besides obviously the wonderful Baia del Silenzio, is the typical caruggio (the pedestrian street so typical of Ligurian villages) with its colorful houses with shops on the ground floor.

La parte finale del Carrugio di Sestri Levante.
Una bella immagine della parte finale della via principale del centro storico di Sestri che termina con la chiesa bianca (Santa Maria di Nazareth).
A dire proprio tutta la verità non sono sicurissimo del nome di questo breve tratto di strada: sono indeciso tra via XXV Aprile (il Carrugio di Sestri) e piazza Giacomo Matteotti (la immensa piazza che parte dalla cattedrale di Maria di Nazareth).
Chi vuole o sa togliermi il dubbio è benvenuto!

Una foto del Carrugio sestrese un po’ desolato.
E’ stata scattata a maggio poco dopo che la Regione Liguria era entrata nella fase 2 e un po’ il tempo non proprio primaverile e un po’ il virus non c’era nessuno nella via che ufficialmente si chiama XXV Aprile.

Portali in ardesia a Sestri Levante.
In via XXV aprile, che poi sarebbe il carrugio, quasi arrivati in Baia del Silenzio, si trovano queste decorazioni.
Non so molto sulla loro storia (e magari qualche lettore più esperto ce ne potrà parlare) ma sono molto spettacolari e belle da fotografare.
Riportano stemmi e araldi che forse sono della famiglia che anticamente abitava questo palazzo.
Assolutamente da vedere!

Si ritiene che l’ardesia fosse utilizzata in principio circa duemiladuecento anni fa nella zona del Tigullio (ovvero nell’area compresa tra il comune di Sestri Levante e la Valle Fontanabuona), già bacino del paleo-oceano ligure-piemontese. Il suo impiego come materiale di copertura di tetti risale a tempi antichissimi ed ha avuto il suo apogeo nell’epoca medioevale e poi in quella del Rinascimento. Oggi viene estratta prevalentemente da cave situate in Val Fontanabuona.
