Duke's alley in the historic center of Genoa

Vico del Duca nel centro storico di Genova

Vico del Duca in the historic center of Genoa.
Walking along the splendid Via Garibaldi, perhaps the most beautiful street in Genoa, several alleys start off that lead down to the most hidden alleys of the historic center.
One of them is this one that starts right in front of Palazzo Doria Tursi.

Here's where this exact point is located:

In Via Garibaldi in front of the Palazzo del Comune of Genoa is the vico del Duca. The caruggio is called this way precisely because of the name of the palace of the Duke of Tursi, seat of the first citizen of Genoa. Tursi is a town in Basilicata that was granted as a fief in 1552 to Admiral Andrea Doria as a marquisate (later duchy) by Emperor Charles V.

The strategic street named after Tommaso Reggio, bishop of Ventimiglia and then of Genoa from 1892 to 1901, is home to important buildings linked to the power and intrigues of medieval Genoa. Here, in fact, are the sixteenth-century Palazzetto Criminale, the small bridge connecting the Palazzetto itself to the cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Torre del Popolo, the Loggia degli Abati, a perimeter wall of the Palazzo Ducale and the Museo Diocesano.

Grillo Spinola Palace in Greek square in Genoa
I love getting lost in the alleys of the historic center of Genoa and photographing everything that seems interesting to me.
Then, when I can, I try to find out more about what my lens had captured.
Like this beautiful palace, located between Piazza dei Greci and Piazza delle Vigne, which I discovered to be a medieval palace built by the Spinola family.

Here is where the palace is located:

The stone portico on the ground floor dating back to the Middle Ages is still preserved, of which the pointed arch on Piazza delle Vigne is broken due to the insertion of two windows, while the lateral arch on Via delle Vigne is still perfectly intact and clearly visible. Furthermore, the hanging crowning arches between the loggia on the ground floor and the first floor have been maintained, although they feature decoration from later periods.

Here is the spot where I took these photos:

A glimpse from Via del Campo to Piazza Fossatello in Genoa.
Every time (or almost) I go to Genoa for some errand I always pop into the alleys (in recent years I often pass by Asian shops to look for products for my wife's Vietnamese cuisine) and almost always, I return by passing through Via del Campo.
This is precisely the final stretch of the street (alley) that continues into the square and Via di Fossatello.

Decorazioni antiche in via di Sottoripa a Genova

Ancient decorations in via di Sottoripa in Genoa.
Walking in the historic center of Genoa, in the part in front of the Porto Antico and the Aquarium of Genoa, you find the characteristic street called Sottoripa.
It runs under the arcades of the buildings on the sea front and hosts a series of local shops (which now sell ethnic street food but which were once workshops).
Walking along you also pass by this point, probably a more important building than the others, of which the decorations of the vault remain.

Here's where the street is:

The road, originally about 900 m long (3613 Genoese palms), today has a length of about 500 m, of which 300 m run under the buildings that form the sea front of the Maddalena district, between via al Ponte Reale and via al Ponte Calvi and continues east in the Molo district up to Piazza Cavour. A further, less known stretch continued, with lower porticoes and set back from the Ripa, beyond via al Ponte Calvi up to the gate of Porta di Santa Fede, parallel to via del Campo.

Here's where I took the photo from:

The Oratory of San Giacomo della Marina is a Catholic religious building in the historic center of Genoa, located on the Mura delle Grazie, in the Molo district. Built in the fifteenth century and rebuilt in the seventeenth century, it is the seat of the “Confraternity of San Giacomo della Marina”. It stands a short distance from the sanctuary of N.S. delle Grazie, on the city walls, in that stretch lapped by the sea until the end of the nineteenth century; throughout the Middle Ages it was an important stop for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

A narrow alley in the historic center of Moneglia, a village in Liguria.
Some time ago I was walking through the beautiful historic center of Moneglia, the town that is about twenty minutes by car from my Sestri Levante, and I photographed this beautiful view.
The small side alleys of the village's caruggio are so charming that they are even used as outdoor seating.
Very nice in my opinion.
