The shrine of Salita Fava Greca in Genoa. The alleys of Genoa are, very often, protected by votive shrines. Like this one of Salita Fava Greca on the corner of two narrow alleys in the historic center. Very beautiful. On amezena.net more details on the name of the alley and the shrine.

The most peculiar feature of the historic center, which so fascinated tourists, was the whitewashing of the houses up to the roofs. The use, attested since the Middle Ages, derives, in addition to the easy availability of lime as a raw material, from the need to ensure the narrow streets and narrow spaces of medieval layout greater brightness, given by both direct and reflected light.

Via Giovanni Nicotera a Finalborgo.
Continue and learn more on Wikipedia.

A glimpse of Ostuni, the White City. If I hadn't written in the title where we are, perhaps you wouldn't have been able to tell me in which village I took this photo, because on the site there are many other images of white streets in Greek or Spanish cities (in particular Mykonos and Ibiza). Well, to tell the truth in Italy there aren't many famous for their whitewashed walls and streets, and perhaps you would have immediately understood that it is a glimpse of Ostuni, the white city in Puglia, near Brindisi.

The beautiful village of Verici in Casarza Ligure. Behind Sestri Levante (but in the municipality of Casarza Ligure) there is the small but very beautiful village of Verici. A few villas and a few alleys make up this small town (which is actually called Bruschi). I was there a few weeks ago along the path that goes from Villa Tassani down to Santa Margherita di Fossa Lupara, very pretty.

Arches in the village of Moneglia. I think that in the last 15 years I had not been to Moneglia, even though it is the municipality that borders mine to the east and the last in the province of Genoa. I was surprised by the alleys and carruggi that I found. Like in this shot in which you can see two arches that join some houses in an alley in the center. The yellow color of the facades then makes the view even more photogenic.

The ancient toponym of Moneglia (ad Monilia) appears in the Tavola Peutingeriana, a copy of the military map of the Roman Empire (11th – 12th century) preserved in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, discovered by the antiquarian of Augsburg, Corrado Peutinger, in the sixteenth century. Small arches between buildings in an alley in Finalborgo. Walking through the village of Ponente Liguria and its characteristic streets. Looking carefully, in these two photos, I underline the beauty of the arches (small arches) that connect nearby buildings.

The town was developed in the Finalese hinterland, not directly on the sea to be more protected against possible Saracen landings on the coast, in an easily defensible place: the confluence of the Aquila torrent with the Pora torrent, whose riverbeds form a single natural moat, later reinforced by the city walls, which defended the town on the east-south-west sides, while the northern side of the town was naturally protected by the spur of the Becchignolo hill.

It was with the Republic of Genoa that Lerici began to assume a more important role. After having purchased Porto Venere and made it a strategic base for the control of the gulf of La Spezia, Genoa also came into possession of Lerici, negotiating with the Lords of Vezzano and Arcola, who were the feudal lords of the locality.
