Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, is the most populous city in Vietnam. It is located on the western bank of the Saigon River. Before its annexation in the 17th century by the Vietnamese, who renamed it Saigon, it was known as Prey Nokor. Between 1949 and 1955 it was the capital of the State of Vietnam and between 1955 and 1975 of South Vietnam.
