Pur non esistendo dati o documenti che attestino l’anno della sua fondazione (forse il 1271), la storia della chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta è strettamente legata alla storia della città della Spezia. Alla data in cui l’edificio Simone Boccanegra, nell’anno 1343 sede della Podesteria (generatasi da quella di Carpena) con vicariato su buona parte della riviera di Levante.
