In latino classico il toponimo è attestato come Bergomum, mentre nel latino tardo Bergame. Il toponimo nel locale dialetto bergamasco della lingua lombarda è invece Bèrghem. Varie sono le ipotesi avanzate per tracciare l’origine del nome della città. Bergamo si trova in territorio pedemontano, laddove l’alta pianura lascia spazio agli ultimi colli delle Alpi e Prealpi Bergamasche, a metà strada tra i fiumi Brembo e Serio. Il nucleo antico della città è stato fondato proprio sui colli.
