The site of the cathedral, as in other cities of ancient origin, is located on the edge of the Roman city: the central spaces of Roman Lucca were highly urbanized and the project for the church of San Michele in Foro to use the space of the forum had not yet been realized. There is no information on the original construction and it has been thought to be an example of an episcopal complex, consisting of a series of grouped churches, with functions.
