Il centro storico della città sorge in posizione strategica su un colle a metà strada tra Firenze e Pisa per cui la città è stata scena di molteplici scontri fra i due odierni capoluoghi, fino alla definitiva conquista fiorentina. Sede di diocesi, San Miniato è un importante centro economico e industriale della zona del cuoio, ed è famoso per i suoi tartufi bianchi e prodotti vinicoli e oleari.
